I have a very annoying porno pop up that continues to pop up on my screen. I've run spyware (not the full version) but don't seem to be able to eliminate it. Today, I noticed at the bottom of the page that if I wanted to remove this annoying pop up I should do this:

To remove the ClientMan app, and all associated apps do the following:

1) Right click on the file below, which is called REMCLI.ZIP - from the context menu, choose "Save Target As.."

2) Save the file to your hard drive somewhere. Once it is downloaded, find it again on your hard drive (wherever you saved it to), and unzip it (using Winzip - which you can get at www.winzip.com - or any other unzipping tool) and extract the executable file remcli.exe to any spot you wish on your hard drive.

3) Make sure ALL copies and instances of Windows Explorer and/or Internet Explorer are closed.

4) Find the file remcli.exe on your hard drive again. Double click on it to execute/run it.

5) Immediately reboot your PC.

6) Once you have rebooted, immediately use Windows Explorer or look under "My Computer" and find the folder/directory called "Program Files". This is usually in C:\

7) Under C:\Program Files, delete the directory called "ClientMan".

Thats it.


Can anyone tell me if that is legit or just another way to get me to sign up for 10,000 additional porno sites?
 
I also use "ad-aware" from Lavasoft. Its free on sites like ZDNet.com. It removes all these little programs that you get when you visit sites. Some that track everything you do and go to. It searches your your memory, registry, hard, removable and optical drives for known Datamining, aggressive advertising, Parasites, Scumware, Keyloggers, selected traditional Trojans, Dialers, Malware, Browser hijackers, and tracking components.

Its free and it works great! I use it at least once a week. I have removed over 700 items on a 1 year old computer.
 
I have also used Ad-Aware - very very efficient program.

BTW, to answer your question: DO NOT FOLLOW THOSE DIRECTIONS. That will be the quickest, easiest way to install and set loose a virus from hell on your system. At worst you could ruin your MOBO or Processor and have to purchase a new one. You need a good system utility software suite (or super experienced user/administrator) to totally check and clean your system.

I'm sorry if that sounds catastrophic or foreboding, but that's the truth of the situation. If you don't know someone you would classify as a "superuser", investigate the other option. Recommend Norton System Works.
 
Thanks Muley, I was wondering if anyone was going to answer the question. LOL :) I needed to make sure I couldn't take care of this one myself before turning it over to my super experienced user/administrator.
