I've smoked a couple bowls out of this tin. Don't care for it. It's too heavily cased for my tastes, but some of you may enjoy it.
Here's the tin description:

The finest cube-cut Burley, chosen for its deep, nutty flavors, forms a robust foundation for this sophisticated blend. Rich, red Virginia tobaccos are added for their subtle sweetness and complexity, while the unique spice of perique provides added dimension. A delicate kiss of brandy polishes the blend to a perfect finish. Barbary Coast is delightfully satisfying, with hints of black walnut, dark chocolate, and dried fruits. The perfect "all-day" smoke!

First post gets it. Members in the U.SA. only please.

Doc,
I have wanted to try a pipe, and have planned on a purchase before the holidays.
I would like to try this tobacco.
Just let me know if I'm correct in thinking that this would not be the best tobacco to "break in" a new pipe.
I seem to be running into that idea a lot in my recent reading.

I would not break in a pipe with this tobacco, nor would I recommend it to a beginner. If you still want to try it let me know.

Since I haven't bought a pipe yet (I'm looking at churchwardens) I would say let Guns have it if he's ready to smoke.

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't this be recommended to a beginner? I'm still ignorant in pipe terms but I thought casing=sweeter taste, and thus would be a good starting point for a beginner. I keep likening pipes to cigars, which I know isn't apples to apples, and would thusly equate a cased pipe tobacco to suggesting a new cigar smoker start out with something mild rather than an LFD Chisel or something along those lines.
Any help in understanding these terms better would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of cased tobaccos burn really hot and wet. A nice attribute for the 22 year old girls, but not so great when it comes to new pipe smokers and trying to figure out how to enjoy a pipe. They can really bite (burn) the tongue.

I can't speak for Doc, but the Virginia/Perique component would also be of concern to me in recommending it for a stone cold beginner. Virginias tend to be pretty temperamental and can cause problems with bite for newer pipe smokers. Perique is a unique and often times acquired taste. It's not something I would have liked to start out with, but I'm growing to tolerate it and even appreciate it in some blends now that I have more experience.

There are "easier" tobaccos to start with. However, there is something to be said for pain as a learning mechanism, so something that tends to bite can teach you a thing or two pretty quickly. It's not the most pleasant way to learn, but some do enjoy that sort of thing.

Good answer. I would add however, that nearly all tobaccos are cased to one degree or another. G.L Pease has written, on another site, that all his tobaccos are cased, and those that say they only smoke uncased blends are deluding themselves.

Thanks for that info, Doc. I'll have to look into that. I wonder if using distilled water with the tobacco while processing qualifies as "casing"? I've got some reading to do...

:)

Thanks for the guidance guys. It seems there are more nuances to pipes and pipe tobacco than to cigars. Lots of interesting reading to be sure.

Thanks a ton Doc! I am looking forward to trying this. Sorry I haven't said something sooner. I have been busy lately and haven't been on CP like I normally am. I will let you know when it arrives and when I light up a bowl.

According to the P.O. it arrived yesterday!

I just got home a few minutes ago, and the package was waiting on me. Doc, thanks a ton for the travelers. Some of my fav cigars. 2 of which I had just smoked my last of within the past week. The Barbary Coast smells.... Intriguing. I haven't smelled a tobacco like it before. I am so interested to find out what it tastes like I am on the way outside to light up a bowl now.

Ok, I have smoked my first bowl. Very interesting tobacco. The smell had me dumbfounded, but the taste was entirely different. I think I am going to have to smoke a couple more bowls to really decide on it though. definately a slow smoker. Could cause a bad case of tongue bite if smoked too fast. Thanks a ton Doc, I think this is one I am going to like. The perique adds a nice touch to it.

That's probably the brandy. One of the problems I've found with this tobacco is that if you let it dry out, so it smokes better, you loose the brandy and ETOH component, because it evaporates.
