Future of Public Cigar Smoking

As the cities throughtout the US and Europe start to ban smoking in public; do any of you think that the "cigar boom" will ever return?

Or, if you have any other thoughts on the future of cigar smoking in public, voice them.
 
I don't know if I want the cigar "boom" to return. Sure, the popularity and increased acceptance of cigars was great, but there were a ton of crappy cigar brands that sprung up and flooded the market. Thankfully, most of those companies have folded and only the good ones stuck around. I'm kind of happy with the way things are, but I guess that's because I don't live in a "Tobacco Nazi" state. As for the future of public smoking, here in Chattanooga they recently opened up a new bar and grill that actually sells cigars from the bar. It's called Fox and the Hound, and it's a pretty nice place. Cigars are overpriced though, I bring my own.

I saw a guy the other day with a bumper sticker that said "I can still smoke in my car." That makes you think, they might be able to stop you from doing it in a public place, such as a mall or food court, but nothing will ever stop me from smoking in a park or somewhere like that. It's too hard to stop.
 
I live near a major city, the People's Socialist Republic of Lincoln, NE where they've passed a city-wide indoor smoking ban that goes into effect, and is supposed to be enforced to the "t' at one a.m. on New Year's Day. :angry2: There are no ordinances regarding public smoking, but I'm sure that will come along in due time. One bar owner is trying to find loopholes in the law and he thinks he found one. The letter of the law stipulates what an indoor facility is. By leaving a gap between the ceiling and one part of the roof, it doesn't necessarily qualify as in "indoor" area. :laugh: :laugh: I personally hope that he succeeds. Amazing how lighting a cigar is suddenly becoming a revolutionary act. To the barricades my fellow oppressed BOTLs!! :D :D
 
I'm not sure what it's been like in the states the past few years, but in the military it's pretty much a given that there is no indoor or public smoking permitted, period. You can't even smoke in your Dorm room or House because, technically, it isn't yours.

That said, one of my favorite restaurant / bars in CA was one that got around the "No smoking in Resturants" ordinance by opening a back "patio" that was open air with a 6 foot diameter nightly bonfire surrounded by a bar type counter to sit at and they allowed smoking in the outdoor section. Crisp Monterey winter with a bonfire, good drinks and nice stogie - only good thing in CA (JMO).

BTW - anyone in monterey - look for "The Mucky Duck" on Alverado.

In Illinois there are a cple of towns that have banned smoking in all restaurants.

Luckily I avoid those towns..LOL!!

We still have a cple of town that have some fabulous bars. and lounges one can smoke cigars at.. and of course we still have the casinos..and local tobacco shops that I can smoke at..

ALso FOx and HOund here in IL is one of the best places to smoke.. NIce atmosphere cigar lounge with comfy sofas and big screen TV's...
 
Thanks goodness for bars (which we have no shortage) and cigar bars, thats about the only places to smoke cigars around my part of Milwaukee. The few resturants I go to allow smoking, but no pipes or cigars. One of the suburbs of Milwaukee wants to ban smoking in all restaurants.

At least I don't live in Madison... if I'm not mistaken you can't smoke anywhere there (would not surprise me if they banned smoking outside in public areas).

Anyone know what the price of A ticket is for being caught?

I'm just guessing, but their reasoning could be that public sidewalks and parking lots are paid for by taxpayer money. Thus, if the taxpayers approve an anti-smoking law on what they pay for......

The city of Lincoln's law is different in that tobacconist shops, and smoking chains cannot allow smoking in their facilities. A tobacconist that I know of plans to put his leather chairs on the public sidewalk(his business is in a strip mall type building) and let people smoke when it's nice. There are certain ways the law can wonderfully be circumvented. :laugh: :laugh: :D I totally hear you Mephiston, it just isn't right, but the tyranny of the majority feels otherwise. :angry2:
 
I bet if all smokers quit paying taxes they would think differantly.Besides its supposed to be A free country, if you dont like my smoke hold your breath :D

Yeah, the Lincoln Journal-Star had an article about city leaders fearing that because of the smoking ban, revenue coming in from keno will be down drastically. Hit 'em where it hurts works best I suppose, I hope the worst for them.

-Sounds like something that should be etched in wood and hang in my study. :D
 
Smoking was banned at all restaurants in Idaho this past July with a law signed by the Governor. Some restaurants have gotten around it by turing their places into "Social Clubs"... all they have to do is place a sign (could even be hand-written) in the window and customers pay a $1 membershipf fee.

As for the fines for smoking in other resataurants, here's what the local paper said:

"Outside of the new "social club" phenomenon, which has caused some controversy, no one seems to be reporting lawbreaking businesses or smokers. The new law would levy a $100 fine on a business that violates the law and a $50 charge on any individuals who break the rules."
