OK, I know there are a bunch of you out there. My experience ended with Atari 2600.

I have Boys, 6-4-.5 that I'm looking to entertain now and into the future.

What would you suggest for them, (not you).

My son (now 30) is a gamer and has been since he was a teen. He's a PS3 fan to the end, although his friends have XBox. We have the Wii downstairs and I recently asked him WHY he loves the PS3.

After you research and compare, PS3 can take the place of multiple things from streaming media, Blu-Ray, and all in HDMI format.

The Wii can do Netflix, but it's in 480p (or i, I forget) and the PS3 will stream Netflix in HD (your TV needs to be HDMI ready).

The xbox can do everthing a ps3 can except play blue ray discs. I have an xbox360 and love it. For your children being the age that they are I would suggest the wii for gaming, however with the wii you can NOT play DVD movies in that console i dont know if that would be a big deal. But they do make more games for children then any other gaming system. Just my 2 cents

I would have voted for #4, but I just don't see it happening these days. Nothing wrong with growing up with the street in front of the house...
So I voted Wii, at least it might get the kids' blood flowing.

For young kids, I'd say a Wii to start with then maybe an XBOX. I had a 360 for several years and just got a PS3. I think the PS3 is more of an adult gamers console based on the games available and that many of them are single player or online multiplayer only.

I have all 3. They all have there strengths and weaknesses.

Wii Pros- Most of the games involve movement so they are getting their exercise. How ever I have found a way to sit down and play most of the games. Wii is also the cheapest out of all the gaming consoles out ($200ish) and the games are usually cheaper (brand new games $20-$60) and most of the games are kid friendly.

Cons- It is not an HD system as stated previously. If they are big on graphics most games are very cartoonish. The controllers are $55 for the "Motion plus" (a lot of the newer games require it) and my also require an additional nunchuk control which is another $20. There really isn't any online game play.

PS3 Pros- I believe (opinion) it has the best games and graphics. You also can't beat the fact that it is 1080p and is a blue-ray player. Online game play is free. WiFi compatible. Parental controls are easy to set up.

Cons- This is the most expensive console on the market $300 for a 250GB PS3. The controllers are $55 a piece. And most new games are $50-$65 dollars. Online game play can have some pretty graphic language because you can use your blue-tooth headset as a mic.

Xbox Pros- They have just come out with the Kinect. I am sure you have seen the commercials. You are the controller. Anything you do the character does on the screen. And boy it is a work out. You can get a new xbox and kinect for $300. Also has some great game titles.

Cons- 95% of the games for xbox you can get for PC because xbox is Microsoft's console. Online game play cost money (I want to say it is $30 a month). Controllers are also $50 and unless you buy an upgraded charger it uses 2 AA batteries. The kinect is $150 by itself the $300 bundle is a great deal but it only comes with a 4GB hard drive, which will be filled up quite fast with the Kinect's software. You can buy a new 250 GB hard drive for $150 and it is a quick replace (just one screw and it does the rest itself) Or you can get the 250GB Xbox with Kinect for $400 but I hard it is impossible to find right now with the holidays.

So the choice is yours.

If you are seriously considering the Wii because they have to "move" to play it, I think at this point you are better served getting the Xbox or PS3 since they both have motion gaming now, but offer the advantage of a "sit and play" console also. The Wii is terrible for non-motion gaming.

Online game play cost money (I want to say it is $30 a month).

They just raised the price to $60 for the year. As others stated, Wii would probably be your best choice with the kids now. But as they get older, I'm sure they would want to play some sports games that havegood graphics, or any other game for that matter. But sometimes I find myself playing their Wii for some Mario Bros and I'm also itching to play that new Zelda game that drops next year.

Just get all 3 and save yourself the headache. You could sell some of your smokes to pay for them :sign: :whistling:

For their ages....Wii. If they are going to stay inside and play games, might as well be active.

Xbox and PS3 all have the same games. So either way with that is just a preference. Id go PS3 for the free multiplayer and lightweight controllers. The wii is super fun for all ages and requires actual work! My dad will sometimes try to bowl from outside the front door lol

I have to agree with everybody on the Wii. For your kids current age it cannot be beat. If you are looking to play a few games on it you will not have much to choose from but i would almost guarantee your kids will love it.

I own all three and my favorite is by far the PS3 but it is more for hardcore gamers. There are some good children games for it but not nearly as many as the Wii.

The Wii is not as active as everyone says it is. I know a lot of people that play Wii sitting down.

Like I said earlier if you are looking for active and fun, get a Kinect for Xbox. If you are unfamiliar with Kinect click me! It really is as much fun as they show.

If you are going for least cost Wii is better. But if you are truly looking for a system that your kids can grow with get them an Xbox or PS3. PS3 has a motion based system out too but it uses controllers like the Wii.

Wii gets old quick sometimes due to its lack of controller based games. Wii controllers are also known for going through your TV due to not wearing the strap and/or the strap breaking.

I may not know a lot about cigars. But, trust me I know video games. I have owned every system since Nintendo and Sega and I have tried just about every type of game there is.

Wii= Cheapest system and a lot of fun.
PS3= Blue-ray, free online, WiFi
Xbox= Hands down the best "active gaming."

Don't forget in about 3 years there is going to be new systems on the market and your kids are going to want those too.

I am also not trying to bad mouth Wii. It is really is a great system.

We just bought another Wii for our family, boys 7 and 4. We have an XBox and like it, but our 4 year old has trouble with the games and hitting button combos needed. In the Wii he can play more games because swinging the remote to hit the ball is a little more intuitive at his age. I think the xbox has better games for me.

I vote for Go the Hell Outside. I love my xBox. My son (13) lives on it. We play the hell out of it. (New Vegas as we speak)

He also is absolutely helpless in the real world of dirt, bugs, thorns, females, girly parts, pokey things and critters. I'm failing as a father because he's sitting on his ass inside safely in the house I provide and not learning to build one himself.

Let me know when Wii substitutes for learning to tie a bowline or a double-half hitch.

i have owned the Xbox, PS2 and PS3. I would say get the Xbox 360 based on how many games there is for it. I love my PS3 but that is the only downfall I see when I go to Walmart. More Xbox 360 games than there is of the PS3. I'm not a fan of ordering games from Gamestop and what not since we don't have one in town and the closest one is like 70 miles or so away. Also the PS3 I have only has 2 USB plugin ports but it is also 250 gig hard drive.

I forgot about the Wii. If you have no injuries that it can flair up, that is the way to truly go. A lot of fun but it is definitely a good way to get some form of exercise for you and the family, Also plenty of games. :D I gave my Wii to my youngest Niece which she happens to have 3 little girls so the 3 great nieces will get a blast out of it this Xmas.

Don't forget in about 3 years there is going to be new systems on the market and your kids are going to want those too.

This is something that is important to remember. We bought a Wii for my son last year (at the time he was 4.5) and he loves it. At the ages you're looking for, I think the "simplicity of the Wii is best for them. I'm assuming at 6 and 4.5, you're not looking to get them hooked up to headsets playing Black Ops with people around the world. I say go with the Wii now, and it will do you right for 5ish, by which time there will be a PS4 or XBox 720 anyway.
