The new passport requirments went into effect today. If you are travelling to Mexico, Canada or the Caribbean by air you are now required to have a passport. If you are travelling there by land or sea then you won't need one until Jan. 08. I'm not sure what the cost is these days to get a new passport, but with travel restrictions getting more and more difficult and passports becoming the golden ticket it seems like a good idea to get one. They're good for 10 years if you're an adult. 5 years for minors I believe, I'm not sure what the cutoff age is for how long your passport is good for.

We're heading over to the local passport office this week to get our kids their passports just in case we decide to travel with them out of the country.

Wow your passports are good for 10 years? We just got one done for our daughter and it's only good for 3 years for her, 5 years for us.

I called the other day cause i need to renew mine..it is expired and I lost it so I have to make a new one anway...it was about 67.00 plus a 30 some odd dollar processing fee

The new law makes a lot of sense to me. I wish it was 10 years in CDA

Yep, for our kids I think it will be 5 years. The funny thing is that we're taking our 4 month old to get a passport, but in 2 years the baby in the picture could be anyone!

If you are over 18 then your passport needs to be renewed every 10 years. Having said that, if you wake up one day and realize the photo in your passport no onger looks anything like you, it might be time to renew as well. When I was 18 I weighed 125 lbs soaking wet and had long hair. Eight years and 50 lbs :whistling: later, I have short hair, a crooked nose, and on my last trip to Finland, me and my passport underwent far more scrutiny than I would prefer.

I heard they will be requiring Pasports for domestic flights, in the near future. If that's the case they shouldn't be charging you. The Airlines should be giving them to you. Hell, we subsidize them enough as it is.

My kids got passports at 8 months. LOL! I need to have theirs updated sometime. Ours have another year or two on them since the last update, but I'm thinking of renewing sooner. They will begin putting tracking chips in passports very soon. These will be able to tell the government exactly where your passport is at.

As I travel a lot, I've had a Passport for many years now. I never leave home without it whenever I travel any where including in the USA. Its better ID than a Driver License except the fact ya not legal driving a car with just a Passport. Obvious of course.

Just tell em yer a pilot and you'll have it in less than week, with no rush fees :whistling: As far as domestic flight I haven't heard anything about that. I know depending on where you live, (chicage for instance) they have passport offices you can go to and get your passport the same day. I could be wrong but seems like a friend needed his to go to Honduras with me and thats what we did. It was 5 or more years ago however.

Yup, our daughter was 13 months when we took the passport picture, in 3 years I doubt if she'll still look like the passport picture.

Wow Matt you have kids? From your posts you've always come across and some dirty old man loner. :sign:

Just remember now everyone that didnt have one will be trying to get a Passport now that crossed over to those places so if you choose the normal processing, it may take even longer. When I did mine I did it out of tourism season and had it in 2 weeks. At the time, they listed the High and Low season on the official site for Passports then so one knew when they should do it. But now its gonna be crazy. Lucky suckers that have to get one now.

I picked 'em up at the bus stop......

When I called the local office to check on what was needed they said right now they are at about 8 weeks processing time, unless you pay extra for priority processing.

And if you are getting passports for minors, both parents have to be there with their own driver's licenses and the kids birth certs.

You can go online and fill out the forms get your photos and then head to the post office minors under 18 need to be with an adult.

The person I spoke with at the passport office made a point of saying both parents needed to be there for security purposes. They don't want one parent getting a passport for the kid and stealing them out of the country without the other parent's knowledge. Maybe going to the post office can circumvent this policy, I'm not sure.
