LOS ANGELES - Bob Denver, whose portrayal of goofy first mate Gilligan on the 1960s television show "Gilligan's Island," made him an iconic figure to generations of TV viewers, has died, his agent confirmed Tuesday. He was 70.

Denver died Friday at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina of complications from treatment he was receiving for cancer, his agent, Mike Eisenstadt, told The Associated Press. Denver's death was first reported by "Entertainment Tonight."

Denver had also undergone quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year.

Denver's wife, Dreama, and his children Patrick, Megan, Emily and Colin were with him when he died.

"He was my everything and I will love him forever," Dreama Denver said in a statement.

Sad news for all of us who enjoyed the Island. Although I did not see the original series (caught re-runs in the early 70's) it was one of my favorite after-school shows along with Superfriends and Land of the Lost.

Gilligan my eye. Bob Denver was the immortal Maynard G. Krebs.

Rest in peace to one cool cat.

It is a sad day. I watched both of those shows as a youth when they first came out. He will be missed but he joins the skipper and Mr and Mrs. Howell. Rest in peace!

Damn Neal, is older than dirt he probably remembers Uncle Miltie and Jackie Gleason when they were live shows!

Oh, oh...you're dating yourself, SC... :D

Edited: Actually, I just went and checked your B-D's, and you're all too young to have seen him as Maynard when it first aired...you hadda have seen it in re-runs...it ran from September 1959 - September 1963, which would have made you guys about 3-4 years old and who the hell can remember what you saw on TV when you were 3 or 4? Now, I can actually claim I did see it when I first aired so I beat all of you...and if you wanna go one step further I remember the first TV my father bought, in 1952, with the tiny screen, and all the neighbors would come over and crowd around it, and yeah, I saw Uncle Milty and Jackie Gleason live...and Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca, and Carl Reiner...and Howdy Doody when Bob Keeshan (Capt. Kangeroo for you youngsters) was Clarabelle the clown...and this was when the stations didn't broadcast until about 4PM and shut down about 9-10 PM...and there were 4 networks...ABC, NBC, CBS, and the Dumont network...so there...oops...I guess I dated myself...:D...threadjack over...

RIP Bob/Maynard/Gilligan...

A small piece of TV history has died with him. RIP Bob.

As for you Sam, I bet you remember Gleason on the Dumont network :p

Nope, he couldn't have...he's too young...the Dumont network shut down in 1956...I remember it very clearly, as that was the year my grandfather died...

Man, another of my childhood hero's gone! :(
While I didn't know him as this Maynard guy, I did some research and found this cool site
Maynard's Coffee House that those older members might find some joy!
R.I.P. Bob, from a big fan of the original "Survivor". ;)
