Giving the gift of cigars

Sending out cigars to BOTL's on the Pass is a pretty simple process. Bag it, protect it with shipping materials, and box it. But, what if you wanted to give cigars as a gift to a friend/relative/person in real life, how would you go about doing it? To me, the thought of handing someone a ziplock as a gift seems pretty tacky. What have you guys come up with to dress up the gift so the packaging looks as lovely as the cigars do? I need some creative ideas for how to give these babies out as gifts this season, because I can think of quite a few friends who would be pretty tickled by receiving some "otherwise unavailable" cigars as gifts.

Thanks guys.

I would think that if you are giving a few cigars to someone the only difference would be the outer package. You would still need a sealed plastic bag of some type to protect the cigars. Get some small gift boxes, tissue, and wrapping paper. Another option would be to use a gift bag.

I agree with Larry, but I don't see anything wrong using the postoffice box, as I believe they are sharp enough to understand protection. I just would not seal the box, I would suggest tape.

If your B&M or another store has a cigar carry case (3 finger leather or plastic/metal tube) that'd make for nice presentation packaging, depending on the number of cigars you plan to give. I think I've seen some metal tubes that seal well that you could engrave as well, if it were a birthday/wedding/groomsman type gift.

A lot depends on whether they already have a humidor or not. For my brother's birthday last year, I took a nice wooden 10-ct humidor (listed as a "travel humidor, but it clearly wasn't---no latch) that I happened to have several of on hand, stuck a jar of humi gel and some nice stogies in it, tied a ribbon around it, and gave it to him. He was thrilled, and still uses it.

BTW, I had them on hand because I wanted to try my hand at decoupaging cigar bands onto one. The only one I ever finished I sent out filled with cigars as an SS gift on another forum, and for years afterward, whenever that guy posted mancave pics or photo cigar reviews, there it was on his desk. Pretty f'n cool.

Depends on how fancy (expensive) you want to get. For the first-time smoker, linky. For someone that might want to dive into the hobby, a fully set up 20ct humi (and an invite to this place). That shouldn't cost more than $20 via cbid and a Boveda. For someone with their own set-up, take the cigars out of your travel-humi and hand them over (with a discussion as to what they're getting). If they're true smokers, they shouldn't give a sh*t about "tacky presentation." I know I wouldn't... :)

I personally might get three really nice cigars and place them in a decent cigar case. Classy gift.

If the logistics was an issue, or if a case was too pricey, a humidipak, or humipouch would suffice.

It's the gift and thought behind it that counts, not the presentation.

I've handed over many a bomb in person and had many handed to me in person. All in some sort of bag. Never once did I think "WTF! No box, or wrapping paper?"

A lot is going to depend on the individual and their set up. I would go with a humipouch/pak just to be safe. Then put that inside some type of protective device. My luck is that if it was not protected I would manage to find a way to damage the cigars, even if it is just driving across town for a dinner party. The box they are in can be as flashy or simple as you like. I know some things remembered and other places carry shiny metal tubes.

I'm planning on giving my brother in law some smokes for Christmas. I think I'll put them in a nice sealed bag with boveda pack, then in a nice gift bag. He doesn't have a humidor yet (I've hinted to his wife she should buy him one for xmas) but I didn't think it was right to buy a humidor for him to present the cigars in. Humidors are kind of a personal item to pick out.
