I see you are in Florida. Out of curiosity, when you go to a local vendor are you hit with state taxes?? ??? In New York they hit us with a 33% tax. That makes buying less attractive here.

i rarely buy cigars in fl as our 1 b&m in tallahassee is very average, at best, but what i've bought there i don't remember there being a fat tax

It has been my experience that the local B&M retailers around here keep them out with the rest of the regular production sticks, while much less expensive stock like VSGs and '64s & '26s reside behind glass at the counter. Even with such easy access they're still hard to move at $30/per.

yeah, i paid $22 ea for 2 of the larger robusto, just to try. On another note, is a Forbidden X worth the $35, i'm thinking about getting one or two - good reviews, but $35, ???

That is a personal decision for each of us. There is no f'n way I would drop 35 bucks for a forbidden opus, or the GOF, or especially the 160. No way in hell. I dropped the coin for the BBMF set and was greatly disappointed. You see, I actually SMOKED them. To my taste buds the forbidden Opus are re-banded Opus blends with special packaging. They are for collectors to look at. If you are a collector then they probably are worth it.

If you are a smoker, I challenge you to try to convince me that they could possibly be that good as to warrent that price.

These companies have struck a chord with ultra-limited release stuff. As I have said before, it is MHO that most folks who buy the stuff do so to come to places like this and say they have them. Some are true collectors, like our friend Moki, and some have mucho disposable income so the price isn't relevant, but most folks on these boards try to keep up with others on these boards.

I for one like to collect and smoke. I bought a box of GOF for my birthday present. I also had half a box of Opus A's. Now to me the Opus was worth it, I had one on my birthday. It was one of the best smokes I have had and I am looking for more. I don't see where you come up with people trying to keep up with other people on this board, maybe I am just blind in that aspect. To me it is also the hunt for the hard to find. I enjoy snooping around and finding what others can't. Once again it is all relative. If you can afford 30 dollar smokes all the time, do it.

I think you misspoke... you meant "psychotic" not "true collector"

The cigars I collect I do so mostly because I enjoy the hunt/collection/taxomony aspect of it; the cigars I usually smoke are just regular production lines that I enjoy.

As I've stated elsewhere here (at the time, referring to the rather expensive Cuban Cohiba "maduro" 2007 LE piramides), I think of it like this: The same way you can rationalize spending hundreds, even thousands of dollars on an expensive suit you wear just a couple of times a year, you can rationalize spending an excessive sum of money on a cigar to enjoy on a special occasion.

The fact that something costs more doesn't make it special, of course, it's just that generally the rarities/fine things in life happen to be expensive due to workmanship and/or scarcity.

So find cigars that you enjoy smoking regularly that are reasonably priced, and if you want to splurge on a special occasion cigar, I don't think anyone would begrudge you.

i am definitely not a collector, i'm not sure if i can sit on the opus i have for 6mths - 1yr. I don't smoke every day, usually 3 a week, so when i do smoke, i can justify (i keep telling myself this when i think of the price tag) the occasional higher end smoke, many times it's just to try one of the more talked about sticks as (obviously) i'm a beginner when it comes to finding the ones i really like vs the popular that i try and are not wild about. As far as the GOF and Forbidden, my thought is on a very special occasion, it would be nice to fire up a really world class rare smoke, hence asking for some opinions as i really don't know, and prolly won't know for sure until i smoke one.

The GOF i ran across some, but if they are usually available, i'm leaning towards not jumping on a box, maybe a single or two. If they are a rarity, then i might be worth it to bite the bullet and sit on them awhile?

I think you're right, but for different reasons. The more you get into anything the more what you learn can become your own worst enemy (at least as far as your bank account balance goes). I've known an awful lot of people who were perfectly happy drinking $4 table wine until they went down the path of becoming a sommelier... ditto with folks who were happy drinking Folgers in a drip machine in the morning until they got into espresso, etc, etc.

Certainly there is always an aspect of "keeping up with the Jones's", that's an undeniable part of human nature... but so too is curiosity

Well, in the case of the BBMF, you happen to be exactly right -- other than the way the ligero is positioned in the cigar, it's just a different vitola with a regular Opus X blend in it. Obviously the vitola influences the taste of the cigar a bit, but it's not like it is an entirely different blend.

Some of the Forbidden X cigars are different blends, though. It really depends on the cigar.

All I can tell you is avoid having dinner with our friend, Andrew here. He'll happily introduce you to the finer things in life and send you on your way to financial ruin Although, he still hasn't introduced me to the sex-crazed naturally big-breasted wealthy Asian girl that he promised.

On another note, I think his explanation on the value of cigars by comparing it to your wardrobe is right on the money. No question that some of my suits have only seen the light of day only once, but I feel it was still a good purchase.

Regarding cigars: I have cigars that I save for special occasions and others that I smoke on a daily basis, but once it hits my humidor, it no longer has a dollar value. At that point its my mood that determines the cigar I smoke. There's been times that I've smoked an every-day cigar on a special day and vice versa. When it gets right down to it:

Yeah I mean there's something nice about going to the humidor, and picking out a cigar that you know the history of, you know how rare it is, how long it's been aging, and you decide to indulge yourself and enjoy it. Like cracking a vintage bottle of wine on just the right occasion.

Hell, most of the rare HTF cigars I own I got on sale. I guess I'm just a frugal bastard at heart.
