Growing too fast.
Two days ago it was in the upper 60s, yesterday it fell down to the 40s, tomorrow…almost 70 again. What the hey is going on with the freaky weather? Today its not quite 50 out, but perfect weather for a nice smoke. Geoff (Stinkimonki) gifted me some smokes probably close to a year ago, one of them being this 2004 God Of Fire Carlito Churchill. This smoke has been calling to me for a while, however I wanted it to sit and get some age, however I decided today was the day to put fire to the God of Fire!
This was a gorgeous cigar with an oily sheen on the slightly coarse, medium brown wrapper. There were a couple of prominent veins running the length, and the weight felt good. As I was holding the cigar between two fingers, snapping a few pictures, I heard and felt a pop/crack. Sure enough, a small crack appeared right where I had been holding it. A few seconds later, another pop and another crack appeared. I had never had this happen before, and Im not sure why it happened, as I dont believe the humidity was that high. But, something had caused it. Ah well, smoke it anyway I will.
I punched the cap with the largest ring on the Swiss Army and found a perfect draw with tastes of sweet, dark pumpernickel bread with slight chocolate notes. There was sweetness on the lips as well, but no sign of a salt taste. With fire to the foot, I was expecting to get some power in the smoke with the first draw, however there was none. Actually, the smoke was quite mild and very smooth, almost silky with tastes of sweet bread, vanilla, and toasted almonds. There was a smidgen of spice on the back of the throat that was quite good.
A few more draws in and the smoke turned to a mild/medium with a bit more spice. The flavors were consistent with a mild finish that I didnt find to be very lasting, but still quite good to say the least. The burn was perfect with a very light gray ash forming that was quite flaky and loose, falling after about an inch.
A third in I was detecting tastes of hay in the smoke, dry and sweet with continued toasted nuts and hints of wood. I was hoping the smoke would turn a bit stronger, however it continued to be a mild/medium, leaning more towards the mild side. I found myself quite relaxed with this smoke and tremendously enjoying the lazy afternoon. The sun was shining on my right side making me want to almost close my eyes and drift off.
Hitting the halfway point, the strength in the smoke actually did build a little with a nice white pepper spice coming through. I tasted delicious flavors of vanilla and chocolate with hints of toasted nuts and a nice woodiness in the very smooth and silky smoke. Of course, the closer the fire got to the cracks in the wrapper, the more it became loose, and I could see binder starting to show a little. The burn started to get a bit slanted, which I contributed with the cracked wrapper, and the almost white ash continued to be flaky and loose. But, there was ample smoke still flowing and quite delicious.
Ah well, the wrapper exploded and got quite messy, however there were no problems with the smoking. I found the finish to lengthen a bit and very satisfying. The strength did slide over to a good medium and the white pepper spice picked up only slightly. Delicious chocolate notes were prominent with undertones of wood and vanilla. There was one point where the cracked wrapper finally burned down and the cigar looked normal again, however once I slid the bands off…boom. Explosion again.
Despite the wrapper/burn issues, this was an excellent smoke with slightly complex flavors throughout. Ive got several 2005 GOF in the humi, not sure if its the Carlito blend or not, however I plan to put fire to another possibly in the next few days. Ya gotta love Christmas vacation!
