For once, knowledge is making me poor!
Going Postal:
Today I used Click-n-Ship to send out a few packages. After two of three shipping labels printed, my printer jammed and failed to print the third label. The ever-impressive USPS web site asks me to check one of two boxes……Box 1….“Yes my labels printed okay, charge my credit card” or Box 2 … “No my labels didn’t print properly, don’t charge my credit card”. I check Box 2, the web site says “Your labels have been returned to your shipping cart and your credit card has not been charged”. So, I proceed to print the one label which didn’t print the first time (don’t ever do this) and then I checked Box 1….“Yes my labels printed okay, charge my credit card”. The web site says I have been charged for the three packages.
As I head out to do some errands I realize my error and that there is a strong likelihood that two of my packages have a non-existant DC# so I take my packages to the Post Office, explain what happened, and ask if they can help……..this went something like a discussion of Nuclear Fission might go with my 1 year old grandson.
Me: (very condensed version) The web site wouldn’t let me print the one label which failed to print blah…blah…blahh… and I suspect that two of my packages have non-exsistant DC#’s.
Post Master: Picks up my packages and says there are DC#’s right here and points to the numbers on the package.
Me: Same story again in detail
PM: The only thing we can do is weigh the packages and confirm the weight.
Me: But what if the system rejects the package as not being paid for? Your web site is a disaster and the sad part is that a junior level programmer could fix this in 10 minutes.
PM: I have heard that but I have never used it so I don’t know
Me: You should try it so you can advise someone what to do to fix it.
PM: (with an attitude) We don’t use it here and that’s a different department.
Me: (also with an attitude) But you are a postal employee!
PM: I wouldn’t even know who to call to complain and all we can do is weigh your package and enter the weight in the system. We have no way of verifying if your label is valid or not.
Me: So, I could print labels and check Box 2 “No my labels didn’t print properly, don’t charge my credit card” and ship all my packages for free?
PM: We would catch that.
Me: You just told me you have no way of verifying if my label is valid or not.
At this point she became even less friendly and rescanned my two suspect packages, printed two $0.00 labels, placed one on each of the two packages and said your DC#’s are on your receipt. Time will tell………….
Gone postal!
