I'm going to try to hit the links a bit more this summer. My set is very pathetic. I was hoping to get a new set for $350ish. When I say new, I mean new to me. I am open to used equipment.

I was considering picking up some Titleist 990s of eBay based off a recommendation. Then, rounding out the set with Clevland Launcer woods. I have noticed that there are some nice deals on last year models new also.

So, what say ye? FYI, nothing is salvagable from my old set :whistling: not even the bag.

Cheers,
Quade

Look at the entry level sets from all the different vendors out there and you are bound to find something in your price range. I would also look at Dick's on-line and see what is on deep discount, especially last year's models.

Search ebay....GREAT deals to be had on there....just watch the shipping costs, they'll get ya there sometimes!

I'm hitting Ping I3+ silver dot at the moment(bout the last year) and love them! Very smooth hitting clubs. Got the 3-L for 350 shipped.

Hitting Clevland Hi-bore driver and woods.

Like the ping because you can buy clubs that are bent for your body type. Just go to the ping site and do the online fit test.

Go to a Golfers Warehouse store - or the like - and get fitted. FOR FREE...well worth the price.

Then, most of those stores have 'used' clubs...compare them to online stuff and you're good to go.

At the 'store', you'll at least be able to try the clubs.

I love the old Titleist 990's, and I'm also a big fan of Mizuno. The only thing is, these are clubs for a better than average player. If you're confident in your game, swing away! Titleist has a few new sets out that are a little more forgiving now, and even the ones from 2-3 years ago (805OS I think?) are not bad.

My thoughts are:

1 - get fitted at a local golf store
2 - assess your game - and be honest with yourself - even the tour pros are using some "game-improvement" irons
3 - check out prices on last years models and used models (& be sure to hit a lot of them)
4 - then check ebay - you can get some great deals, but be sure you know what your getting

I've played Taylormade, Mizuno, & Cleveland irons. They've all been great for me. Of course, I have a good friend who plays an old set of Nicklaus irons that swears they're the best clubs ever made. I'd have to beat him on a regular basis to be able to argue, and I'm a few strokes away yet :(

The dream has always been "to be good enough to play blades." But even if I was that good, I still don't think I would. New technology has made the game so much easier!

Best of luck - Lee

I wish I woud have gone to get fitted for my Ping I3 :( . I just bought the standard lie black dot and they have been sitting in the bag ever since hit them less than 5 times. Hopefully someone will take them off my hands and enjoy them it's such a shame to just see them sit there like that. I still use Ping but it is an old school Ping Eye set, I just keep regripping every year. I have to agree Ping and Callaway make the most user friendly clubs. I have found Mizuno and Titleist to be more for the average to better than average player IMHO. Good luck with whatever you go with, the good thing is the game of golf is always a challenge.

What Gary said. A number of the bigger golf shops offer 90 day return policies. I got my clubs that way ( a returned set), and saved big time.

As for what to buy, consider how long you plan to keep this set, will you ever want to have them fitted, length loft and lie (not all clubs can be adjusted), and how much you want to spend. Then hit a lot of balls with each set that falls into your needs. One of them will feel better, hit truer, be more consistant. Be sure to hit a number of the irons, not just the six that they have out on display. The salesman is likely commissioned, make him earn your money.

Finally, when it comes to woods and wedges, don't feel like they have to match your set. Again, figure out what you want them to do and test drive the ones that fit the bill.

Quade:

90% of the performance of a golf club is in the shaft. Matching the proper flex point, stiffness, and torque to your swing is really "all" that matters. Next most important is the lie angle. The best thing you can do is to get fitted at a country club or someplace where the pro knows what he is doing. For example, I am 5' 10" with long arms so you would think I should use short clubs. I use +3/4" clubs that are 2.5 degrees flat by Titleist standards (every manufacturer is different). I get fitted every two years by Titleist just to see if anything has changed.

98% of amateur play with clubs that are not right for them and then they play with their swing to try to get that club to work.

PM me if you want any more details

Good luck

I definately agree with Jeff on the shafts. They are often overlooked, and they're like the engine of the golf club. He probably is the guy to talk to about all this, considering his background.

My dad gets all of his equipment from Callaway Golf Pre-Owned and they look like they have never been hit before. I would definitely get fit first and then make a purchase.

Good talking to you today Jason. Like I said, fitting is paramount, get a club to fit your swing, forget name brands, not that they're bad, but just don't get hooked on something because of it's label. Get fitted, get fitted, get fitted.

Try to pick up a set of Ping Eye 2s (the size is color coded, so make sure you get the right color for you).

Best clubs ever (IMHO, of course)
