Well guys, I didn't think this would ever happen to me, but it did. I just started my new 48 hour shift schedule, and the 1st day went find no bid deal. But the 2nd day was going great until we got a call for a fully involved structure fire, I was in the role of a firefighter that day and was not on the rescue squad. Our engine was first on scene, the house had fire coming out the front living room window and out the roof, this was a single story house on a residential street. While we where getting ready to make an initial attack on the house a neighbor came over and said that she did not see the owner of the house come out. Well that changed the situation dramatically, so myself and my captain went in the front door with only our airpacks on and a fire tool and axe. The smoke was rather thick and was about 2 feet off the floor, we searched the front room and found nothing, so we proceeded to the back room when we noticed a body in the hallway leading to the back. Well it didn't take my captain long to pick her up. We turned around to go out but our progress was halted by the fall of the roof blocking our way forward. So we turned around and with my captain in front of me we started to go out the back door, my captain with the victim made it out the door, but when I was going out, I was blown thru the door with such force I landed approximately 45 feet from the house, I was thrown against a tree which fractured my left humerus(my upper arm) and knocked me out for approximately 5 minutes, luckily nobody else was hurt, the cause of the blast was a barbecue grill which was inside on the porch the propane tank and the other 2 bottles cooked off(exploded). Well the lady survived the fire but is still in intensive care with respiratory burns, but she is expected to survive. In my case I was in the hospital only yesterday and was released last nite(I hate hospitals) I will be home for about 2 weeks and then go on light duty at the station for 4 to 6 months. Now the moral of this long conviluted story is 2 fold. (1) ALWAYS make sure you have a working smoke detector, or more depending on the size of your house, (2) If you do use bottled propane DO NOT keep it inside of your residence. This can not only cause a potentially small fire to become an out of control fire, but can hurt or kill anybody trying to help. So with this said, PLEASE EVERYONE check your smoke detectors and just walk around your house for potential hazards(paint/gas cans/propane) or any other hazards which can stop you or your family from exiting safely from your house in a fire situation.

DAMN BRO"!!!! what an ordeal.
hope you recover quickly and thank you for your service to the community

Now to give all of you the mindset that I and the rest of the firefighters have, after the fire and while at the hospital, my captain and everyone else on my shift came down to the hospital and we went outside and fired up a stogie, I don't remember which one, since I was a little doped up from the drugs(I think :p ), and we just joked about how funny it was to see someone fly thru the air. They all thought I should have joined the circus instead. Now don't think that they where being callous, that is how we show concern and gratitude that we are all alive, now I don't want you to think that we are all just thick headed macho guys that have no emotions or that we do things by the seat of our pants, it is not like that at all. We all understand the risks and it is just we don't like to think about it. We just do the things we do because basically it is our job, thats all.

Come on! We know you think your a tuff guy! :p

Glad your ok!! ;)

PG that's what we called "Gallows Humor" when I was in law enforcement, especially when we got involved in a death-involved case. It's a way to keep your sanity, bro.

D@mn Brother....didn't you see the article in EVERY paper nationwide....Sonny Bono dies after tryin' to tackle a tree!! LMAO!!! C'mon, next time just take the axe yer Cap'n has and start choppin'! :sign:

I'm sure someone will have an article (nicely reworked via the computer) for a tree service in your name. :D I do know how co-workers can be. Once they know you are alright, all bets are off. Everything is open game!!

All jokin' aside, I'm glad to hear you'll be fine after a bit of recovery time. Take care!

Thanks alot all. The only problem I think I will have now is that I will go stir crazy sitting around the house. Nothing to do here, except the computer and smoking cigars. HEY wait a minute this isn't so bad after all :p

You forgot to add the part where your massive bicep smashed the tree in to toothpicks.

I hope you, and that lady, get to feeling better.

Scott
Just checked my smoke detectors. :D

Glad to hear you didn't hurt the tree.... :0 :p (wouldn't want you to think WE are callous! :D )

Dr Allofus recommends rum shots as part of your medical treatment.

Glad to hear you're doing ok as well as the lady whose life yall saved. I'm sure you would welcome another fight with a tree if the outcome would always save a life. Good Job!

I was just thinkin'.....................With the amount of "posting" you do while you have been worken'.......................Now that ya got all this free time......Jesus! were going to need a new server again!! :sign: ;)

OH MY GOODNESS!

I was just about to start a thread about the amount of posts by PG, and suddenly I see the reason why his post rate is so high today. . .he is stuck at home!

I am so glad to hear that you are okay. . .however you didn't tell us if the tree survived!

Concerning "Dark Humor", I served as a chaplain for five years with our local Hospice program. I was the primary chaplain and attended all staffings. "Dark Humor" was often the only way those dedicated Doctors and Nurses could cope with the intensity of their work, and I am certain that is the way it is in your line of work too. (In fact, it is often the only way I can cope with MY work. . .LOL)

Get well soon, and now I suppose you can change your Username to HumanCannonBall! ! !

HAPPY SMOKES! ! !

Glad to hear you'r ok . Sorry about the tree. :p

Am truely glad you're there to do the job, as I know I couldn't. I was in a house that caught fire when I was 16, no one hurt, but sure is scary crawling out at 3am. 5 min after we all got out and 3 min before the Fire Dept got there the basement windows blew out and the floors gave way. Not something I could walk into, ever.

PG,

I serve on the board of The 100 Club in Arizona. Have you heard of it? We provide benefits to fire and police injured or killed (to the survivor) in the line of duty. Does your community have this group?

100 Club of Arizona

Glad you are OK bud. I work closely with cops and ff's daily. You guys are the backbone of our society. I'm proud of you and glad you are ok.

Bruddah PG,

I'm glad to hear you're ok... here's hoping for a full and speedy recovery! Take it easy and enjoy those smokes while you're recuperating!

Aloha,

Never heard of it. That is a really great idea to have. I am lucky my dept. pays me full pay while on disability, Luckily I just broke my arm. I will be going back to work in 2 to 3 weeks. Most likely less. I will be doing building inspections and PR stuff. Plus I will be in charge of qualitiy assurance for all patient care reports done in the field :( . Not my idea of fun since I prefer being on the rescue and not behind a desk

I hear ya. Check out the link in my last post. No reason a club can't be started in your area!!!
