Well last year my dad bought an extremely nice laptop and basically used it to surf the web. Anyway he knocked it off his desk, broke the case and the screen and gave it to me about 3 weeks ago, telling me if I fixed it I could have it.

I bought the same model off of ebay for 130 bucks, the guy had spilled water on it. Well it came it today and I tried to start it up and everything worked except it booted and said something like NTDLR is missing. Whatever that means. I got my trusty Radio Shack screwdrivers and set out to dismantle it and my dads. Four hours later I had the insides switched and I have an almost new super nice laptop. Now I have to put my old one back together and move everything over.

One question, all I really need to do is access the old hard drive. I already have it out and it is just plug and play. Anyway to find an adapter and hook it up to my new laptop like an external HD and transfer everything over. Reason being is on my old laptop it won't power from the plug, only the battery and I have tried everything. I could put it back together and run it off the battery. But making an adapter for the hard drive would be nicer.

It is extremely important as it has my flight logbook on it for the past 7 years. Yes I am dumbass for not backing it up..

Thanks in advance

Shane

Thanks a bunch to tkoepp, he pointed me in the right direction. Made an order so hopefully it will all work out.

You're a life saver man.... It took me 4hrs a day over five days to transfer my handwritten log book to my computer and that was fours years ago!!! Since then everything has been on my computer.

Your welcome bro... when your in town buy me a beer and were even.. :)

Way to help a brother out, tkoepp. You're still in the hole for that damn puzzle, tho. :p

"TKOEPP.. the most cursed individual on 12/29/06" :sign:

Dont worry, Im gonna change the sticks up a bit and repost a easier one in the morning, unless someone actually gets it tonight

IF you bought the same model, why not just swap the Hard Drives?

he spilt water on it... it started just came up NTDLR MISSING..... either the motherboard was toast or the hard drive.....

tkoepp...... "A beer" are you kidding me.... you don't know me well enough obviously

You probably got a better deal than you thought on that laptop. 'NTDLR is missing' is normally just a missing file or a software conflict and can be easily fixed (sometimes a little more complicated depending on the operating system). Worst case is to re-install the OS. If it booted to that point, the motherboard is fine.

Well I might piece it back together. Thanks for that.

Yep OS problem only... put it back together, reinstall windows and sell it for a profit... WIN!

Like others have said, NTLDR is just a missing component from the OS and both the motherboard and hard drive are fine. Sounds like you got a heck of a deal on a laptop that just needs the OS reloaded, especially if the guy sent all the media that came with the laptop. That stack of media should have an OS disk that'll allow you to build the system to the original load, and then all you'll need is the hard drive enclosure for your old drive to access the data.

No media, but I do have the system restore from my dads laptop, only thing I would need a screen, as his was broken...

Careful though...that disk will wipe the drive by default. Most of the time I've used them, that's what I wanted.
