I want a gps with the basemap for trips and stuff and to carry on my fishing trips. I've been looking at the Garmin Etrex Legend or the Etrex Legend C if I can find it for cheap. the Legend goes for about 150 bucks. Anybody know anything or a good one I didn't mention.

Girlfriend bought me a Garmin Legend for my bday last April. I am very happy with it. It's great for marking structures and fishing hot spots. I have read good reviews on the Fishing Hot Spots software. It's pricey, but I plan on purchasing before next fishing season.

The Legend C is double the price, not sure if the additional features justify the much higher price.

This is the only GPS I have used, but I recommend.

I use the Garmin 3+ for my job and it works really well..... especially when interfaced into a laptop (serial port or usb connection - 4800 Baud data transfer - will update laptop mapping program's position every 3-5 seconds or so)

The military bought me the Garmin eTrex Legend fr my personal survival gear. To be honest I haven't used it much, but if they believe that downed aircrew can survive better in bad guy land with that GPS, then take that as you will. Either it was teh cheapest that was "good enough" or they honestly thought it would make a difference in our survival. Since it was my commander and not some far away Star that never met me, I'd like to think that latter is the case. My current CC is a really good, prior-enlisted O who takes an interest in us and our jobs.

Good to hear that. It's always better to have a guy that's been there before making tactical decisions.

I can't give you any advice on current models. My Map 12 was bought some three or four years ago and I'm sure there's been significant advancements to put more features in for less $.

If you have ever had a GPS you will know what features are useful for your needs. You really must determine exactly what you want to use it for and then head down to a store that has salespeople that are capable of explaining the features. If the salesman does not understand the features find someone else or move on to another store. Once you've settled on the one you want you can either buy it from the store or shop it on line.

I will advise you that if you have plans to use it on your fishing trips that at the minimum you need to be sure that its water resistent. Trust me on that one.
