Some may have heard of this on the news not long ago, but of course it hit me personally, as it's just too close to home...

At 5:26pm CST, Texas A&M University sent out a Code Maroon (mass contact to students) that a gunman was on campus. The E-mail read:

"Report of man with gun in HR Bright bldg near Chem,Police searching. Seek shelter, avoid area. 5:26pm 3-06-09"

Of course, this was rather scary given another event in our small town today. Two Aggies (a brother, c/o 2008 and a sister, c/o 2010) were murdered at their residence just a couple hours before. :(

See story: HERE

THANKFULLY, A&M later released a follow up e-mail stating:

"Bright, Chem bldgs have been checked and cleared, no man with gun. Sheltering can end. Report suspicious activity. 6:12pm"

I guess the reason I'm posting this is this; whenever some individuals see shootings or scares in the news...if it's not close to home, it is never given a second thought. Given today's occurrences at A&M...and the shootings that didn't happen on campus (shooting was done by another local student) I learned never to take my location for granted with the perception that "of course it's safe...it's home!" I'm very thankful that the campus scare was a false alarm.

Damn Jake, for some it's very easy to ignore the news because its too depressing but when it hits so closely to your home there is no way you can avoid it. Glad to hear that nothing came of the gun man.

I am so glad that this didn't end worse. Gotta be careful wherever you are. People are just getting worse and worse. :(
Be safe brother!!

Another reason there is a push in some states to allow CC on campus. That campus cop is not gonna protect you. At least allow personal weapons in cars so you have somewhere to flee. Bill in Indiana to allow storage of weapons in cars while on campus heading through right now.

Without taking this political...

A&M students have been pushing very hard the last year to have CC allowed on campus. The opposition claims that "they'd feel uneasy knowing that some students around them are carrying," but then again...anyone could be carrying at any time, and no one would know. The thought of violence, from a gunman's perspective, could easily be deterred knowing that anyone in any room could end a rampage quickly if they were to start one.

College campuses are not confined to one building like the lower levels of education. Security is not nearly as good at said universities due to the large populations that walk campuses daily. It's a scary thought knowing that anyone can walk into a 300 person lecture hall at anytime, and there will not be one responsible individual with the capability to stop it. However, this is just my opinion.

I hope the bastard that called in the hoax, especially after what happened earlier in the day, gets what is coming to him. Gun threats are not something to joke around with.

Hey Jake, thanks for the information and I'm glad you're safe brother... That's definitely some unnerving stuff right there, so I'm glad it was false and you made it home in one piece. I think they should allow for CC on campus, because incidents like college campus shootings would probably die down...

Idiots....

Glad to hear you're ok as well as the campus. What a tragedy about those two siblings though, at least in Texas that guy will get what's coming to him. I did find this passage from the news story a bit odd though:

Travis Joiner, 23, died before he arrived at College Station Medical Center, according to that facility's officials. Rachel Joiner, 21, underwent surgery, but died of her injuries. The extent of those injuries was not released by authorities Friday evening.

They don't know the extent of the injuries that killed the poor girl? Am I reading that correctly? ???

I read it as they know, but aren't letting the public know. I could imagine a situation where the family wouldn't want that information spread and it isn't necessary.

All school pride aside, I'm really saddened to hear about something like this. All kids want to do is further their education and they constantly have to worry about someone taking a shot at them. Mercy on the souls of person that made that idiotic call....
