Cigar: Gurkha Grand Master Dos Capas
Size: 8.5 x 52
Smoking Time: 1hr. 45min.
Drink: Water

Pre Light: This cigar is very aesthetically pleasing. It has a beautiful appearance and draws you to it once you set eyes on it. I presume this cigar will smoke for quite awhile, and can only hope it smokes as good as it smells and looks.

First Third (8.5 – 6.0): The initial puff off the end of this cigar leaves you desiring and wanting more. It is full of flavor and very earthy. As the cigar smokes through the remaining 1/3, it becomes more bland and leathery, leaving you searching for that initial first puff flavor of love. I must admit however, the aroma that comes off the tip of the cigar as it rests in the ash tray as I type has got to be one of the best aromas that I have ever smelled from a burning stick.

Second Third (6.0 – 3.5): The cigar picks up to be a little more medium bodied, and not so light and bland. The leathery taste intensified a little bit with hints of coffee and earth. It seems as though the flavors in this cigar are all over the board. It started nice, sweet and almost perfect. Then there was almost a sudden drop off in flavors, and they started building up again at the beginning of the second third of this cigar. I hope they keep building, this cigar would finish nicely.

Last Third (3.5 - .75): The cigar begins to get quite spicy, and more full bodied. The earthy tastes have disseminated and the leathery and coffee flavors remain. This cigar is all over the spectrum in almost all areas: flavor, burn, construction. It is very inconsistent, but not overly disappointing or unbearable.

Conclusion: This cigar is acceptable if you can find it for some of the “low gurkha prices.” It looks and smells a lot better than it smokes, though it’s still difficult to get past the beauty of the dos capas (two layers/ wrappers). I don’t think I’ve smelled an aroma off of a cigar that is nicer than this one, however. The burn is pretty inconsistent, and would have short periods where there would be a “run” and one side would get ahead of the other. I can’t see I enjoyed the taste of this cigar as much as I had hoped, but it certainly is a nice one to sit next to while someone else is smoking. If you can get it for the lower prices, it’s a decent mild and long smoke. Otherwise, it’s not really worth the time to smoke it.

Nice review man! That thing is a monster. I have not tried one of these, but have had my share of Gurkhas. Hit or miss, it seems to me. I was enamored with the brand (read: packaging) last year, less so lately. I can't keep up with all the blends. BTW, is that your lighter in the first pic?

It's the store's that I work for. We carry all sorts of cool table lighters, that ones just a standard butane colibri that hold lots of fuel. Gurkhas are hit or miss, but I got this and didn't have humidor room so say screw it, let's do a review. I jigged down another review today too on the camacho 2007 liberty. But i'll put it together and post that one tomo.

Good review.

I have not yet plunged the Gurkha Depths yet, despite their excellent presentation, they do have a reputation for poor flavour.

Is it worth trying?

Nice review although you went through that pretty fast in only 1:45. I think I can add another 30 minutes to the ones I've had.

You did better than I on this cigar. I couldn't finish it, it was not worth the time or effort for me. It was harsh, and had the same burn problems that you encountered.

Anyone give the CAO Americana a go?
I had one the other week and really enjoyed it. The construction was spot on and it was a nice medium bodied stick. The price wasn't bad either.

I'm doing another review today on a dos capas. I do like the Americas, but I will post a review of that one tomorrow.

I wasn't impressed by it, but if you can find them for their $4 a Stick, why not!?

For the 2+ hours it takes to smoke one, personally, I would rather spend the time on a more enjoyable stick. As others, and yourself noted, I had major burn issues with the couple I tried, and they just don't live up to the billing.

With fewer places to smoke cigars, and less time to smoke them, I get upset when I've committed to a larger vitola, and then find out it's either not very good, or a pain in the neck to smoke.
