Hey, thanks, all you guys! I'm astonished.
My wife, who hates smoking and cigars and really wishes I didn't smoke, bought me two Padron 5000s and a Partagas Black Label Clasico for my birthday. (I'm a light enough smoker that that will last me for months: I don't just burn a P5000 or a PBL at a moment's notice, it takes a really special occasion.)
My wife always has Columbus Day off from work (she's a professor), so I took it off too, and we spent it together--well, mostly. I had a decadent breakfast of leftover birthday cake and ice cream, then took the dogs out on the porch and spent almost an hour, while she was getting ready, smoking a Padron 2000, drinking a Diet Coke, and reading a new Larry Niven/Jerry Pournelle novel. Heaven!
Then we got lunch and took it out into the woods at the edge of the reservoir and had a (ahem!) wonderful time. We were far enough out in the wilderness that we could just barely hear the trucks on the highway, and there was no one about--possibly except for a few bowhunters in the trees, as it is deer season around these parts. (Bowhunters are hard to see, though, if they're any good.)
After that we went to an arcade and dropped $20 playing various force-feedback video games--mostly driving games, which my wife won an embarrassing number of.
Then it was back home, and I spent a large part of the evening playing Operation Flashpoint on my wife's computer (it's the fast one), and she didn't complain.
Hard to imagine how it could have gone any better.
