And if I remember correctly (which is pretty doubtful), the "clean slate" isn't until Kol Nidre, the night before Yom Kippur in a little over a week. The "clean slateness" of it all is debateable, though. Some interpretations have even led to some of the oddest forms of mis-informed anti-semitism, as people used certain translations as "proof" that Jews could cheat non-jews and then be completely absolved. Someone who is more religious than I could give a better explanation, I'm sure...
