Well, I started smoking hookah about 2 months ago. Since then , I've fallen down the slippery slope of both pipes and cigars ... and a few other things ;)

Anyway, I was looking for some general recommendations on pipes and tobacco. So far, I've bought two pipes and a few different kinds of tobacco. Now, with the economy I've been doing this over time and on the cheap. First pipe I bought from some local head shop. I still can't figure out exactly what it is, but it was 10 bucks and it's made of some kind of wood. It says "meershaum" and "corn cob" on the bottom ... but it's dark brown and made of wood? It's ok, but the medico filter burned up so I got suckered into buying one of these "made in china" steel bowl jobs from a tobacco shop down the street. $15! Not worth it as the stem broke in a few days and I later found out I could have gotten it for like 5 bucks online. So, I'm now trying to figure out what estate pipe would be best bang for the buck on Ebay. I'd like to get something with a stem/bowl with room and some cooling action.

As far as tobacco, I've basically been buying the "bulk" tobacco at these local shops. The first one was a "no name brand" thing and wasn't very good. Other place carries "peter stokkebye". This seems pretty good, but I'm also confused because there are so many varieties of this online and his names don't seem to line up with everything online. I'd love to find some smooth good smelling tobacco I could enjoy smoking. I'm pretty fond of that old time "cherry pipe" smoke smell but haven't found that yet. Also, I'm trying to figure out that "pack technique" and how long to smoke before dumping the bowl. Seems it "peaks" at a certain point then gets harsh which is kinda like hookah or anything else I guess.

Well nice to meet y'all and thanks for any advice :)

I reccomend skipping Aromatics completely, and going straight for a light english and a Virginia blend and maybe even a burley. For a light english I suggest Davidoff Royalty, Pelican, No.8 by mcclellands. For a Virginia I suggest Blackwoods flake, 5100, Christmas cheer's (all by mcclellands), C&D opening night and Best brown flake if you cand find it. And as for burly's I suggest wessex burley slice, Solani's Aged burley flake and Gatlin burly. Gatlin burly is topped with a simple topping that doesn't ruin the taste for me, so you may want to try that first if your still smoking aromatics.

Hey thanks for the reply. Have any suggestions on where to get all these different tobaccos at good prices?

Welcome to the "elite" of CPass! :)

Here's a couple blends I'm enjoying lately:

McClelland Drama
C&D Exhausted Rooster

But you'll have to experiment. Luckily, pipe tobacco is pretty cheap compared to cigars. ;)

Look through the really long What's in your pipe today? thread for some ideas and then as previously suggested, go to the pinned thread at the top titled Places to buy Pipe Tobacco & Accessories for ideas on where to purchase the blends you decide upon.

Nobody can tell you what to buy and where to buy it. Those are things you need to figure out for yourself based on personal tastes and the personal appeal of vendors.
