My youngest turns 21 in September and has pretty firmly resolved to become a police officer. What sage have you to offer, please?
Reserve Officer Program
Find out if he likes it first.
I don't think reserves are in the cards for him. He has signed up for a ride along, part of a course he is taking in college. If he can't find a sponsor for POST (don't know if this is a local term, but it's a state accredited P.O. cert program offered by the local college), he intends to pay for it himself. His ride might wind up being the most boring patrol in Colorado, but I think it'll only stoke him further.

Just let him know to be patient, it took me 14 months from civillian to academy trainee to FTO trainee to full time Police Officer...keep at it.
Whoa, I'm not feeding him for the next 14 months!
I think this is a calling for him. The service was a calling for me that I answered at 17 and wish now that I had stayed for 20. Good advice and thanks for the offer, SD.
Why do they make it so hard, not just the academy but generally? To the best of my knowledge we need as many law enforcement guys we can get...so, make it easier ???He's going to have to be patient. As i sated, i just put my applications in about 3 weeks ago, i spoke with the Head of personel yesterday and was informed that IF (fingers crossed) I do get hired to attend the accademy, the accademy wouldn't start until February of 2009. That's almost a year of being in the actual application process....it's long and a pain but stick with it...it will pay off
I worked my way through college as a dispatcher. I loved it, and I took care of my officers. You never piss em off with a check call.
check call??? huh?

Bruce, would your son want to be mountaineer, if you were one? LOL
BTW, what does "find a sponsor" for POST entail.?
Brian
If a department hires him uncertified, they will pay for POST and a recruit salary. The exception is City of Denver, who still maintains their own academy. He can elect to take it and pay for it himself. In other words, I pay for it. It's not that much, about $5K, but he'll have to flip burgers at night to feed his truck. POST certified, he'll be (more) marketable to any department in the state.

An officer calls out on a potentially dangerous situation. I gave him 2 minutes to call in, then I'd call him. If he said anything but "clear", the entire deployed force would move on his location.
