THE HISTORY CHANNEL

Modern Marvels : Tobacco.
Airs on Wednesday November 08 10:00 PM EST

Discovered around 18,000 years ago, tobacco was first cultivated in the Andes between 5000 and 3000 B.C. At a modern tobacco farm in North Carolina, a farmer will show us how the crop is harvested and cured and we'll visit the Fuente cigar plantation in the Dominican Republic. While tobacco has brought pleasure to countless smokers the world over--it has sent millions to an early grave. In an interview with the Surgeon General, we will explore this leading public health issue. The show will also look at smokeless methods of consumption as well as explore the use of nicotine replacement therapy.

Yeah, I thought it would be good but straight downhill after the Fuente plantation. Dangit! Worth checking out. Thanks Bilder. :)

I'm sure i'll change the channel when the tabacco bashing starts, but it sounds interesting enough for me to check out. Thanks!

I'll watch it just to see the Fuente scenes! When they start bashing or lumping I;ll start clicking! :D

Was not a bad show.

They bashed cigarettes pretty bad due to all the chemicals and such in them, but cigars and pipes were presented in a neutral way for the most part. They did mention the oral cancer rates for cigars and pipes, but also mentioned that lung cancer is much lower among cigar and pipe users.

The footage and interview with Fuente were pretty cool.

Pretty straightforward, honest reporting of the facts, I thought. Neat footage of the Fuente stuff...

The Fuente section was nice. Other than that, it was all government BS. EVERYBODY DIES!!!!! I dare to show me an anti tobacco study that was not funded by the government. Prove me wrong.

I have little or no use for government, particularly at the national level. That said, I've never had any doubt that by smoking a few cigars each week, I've increased the chances of my developing cancer to some degree. The rewards outweigh the risks, IMO.

Further, I have no doubt that cigarette smoking increases those risks further, and greatly. That's why I no longer smoke them.

The show seemed pretty balanced to me. I'm not sure why you're so agitated about it.

Tigger is spot on. And, according to the TV show, cigar smokers have a much, much lower chance of developing lung cancer than cigarette smokers, but the same chance to develop esophagial and mouth cancer. That said, 8 times more people die from lung cancer than from espophagial and mouth cancers combined.

I thought the show was pretty fair with respect to the whole smoking/anti-smoking debate and I'm a little irritated with my girlfriend for only letting me watch half

Anybody got this taped?
