Having a Greek mother and hanging around Coptic Christians at the Orthodox Church, I know a few things about hookahs, at least I think I do.
Sheesha is, in fact, tobacco combined with fruit, honey, molasses or whatever (these days) at a ratio typically not favoring the tobacco - so if people who smoke Moontrances call those tobacco, so is sheesha
And hookahs, traditionally, were used to smoke hashish and opium, however, the drug stigma of these has died since smoking the tobacco variety is pretty popular with college crowds. My town of Ann Arbor, a college town by every definition, has a hoohka bar that serves coffee, a night club that specializes in hookahs and a few off campus, in town, hookah places. The cigar shop sells hookah tobacco and charcoals, but not typically hookahs, although I imagine that will change soon. It's primarily a novelty thing, I think, and something people do with friends 'occasionally', but, that said, a lot of people are picking it up, especially those younger people who want that "bad, cool smoker" image while not actually being a "bad, cool smoker". It's like an indie poser thing.
Also, Peat, I've got a bottle of mead and a clown costume. Party tonight...
Its not tobacco. I dont know why people get this perception that Sheesha is tobacco or associate Hookahs to Pot smokers. Its fruit peels, molasses, and if not molasses, its honey. Ok so there is like a 0.05% nicotine in there which I dont know how that comes about. Its a very cool smoke and depending on the flavors, like lemon which I have found to be nasty. So know your fruit and you will probably have an awesome experience puffing on a hookah and inhaling it.
Rod, it sounds like you got the cheap ass charcoal thats a bitch to light. Get the stuff that is quick light. Let me tell ya, those days of struggling to get the charcoal going is long gone. Apply a little flame to the charcoal disk and in less than 3 seconds, its cherry red.
