On Feb. 25, 1870, Hiram R. Revels, R-Miss., became the first black member of the United States Senate as he was sworn in to serve out the unexpired term of Jefferson Davis, former President of the Confederate States of America.
 
If Lincoln hadn't of been assassinated by a southerner, this probably wouldn't have happened when it did. Reconstruction would have taken a different course. That's the irony.
