I am officially scared

Very scary, but I see it everyday because my wife is a private school teacher, I see 4 year olds that are more advanced than 8 years in public school.

American students scored pathetically low on standardized tests against other countries. -- Believe it!

hmm.. Being a fairely fresh highschool graduate, i can certainly say that Canada is defenently NOT like that, in any sence.

Wooo!

Sad but true. When I attended College in Nebraska I had friends from other countries and they used to tell the the stuff that they did. One was getting his PhD in Physics and while he was in 9th grade in Africe, they would find the hardest math problem the could and sit around and solve it. I watched him do calculus work in his head. I cant say that for American students. :( Hell, looking at calculus used to give me headaches.

And yes I watched the link from beginning to end.

Whats sad is this then spills over into College level. I had Professors at UNL in the English Department that didnt care about serious grammar problems. So when I transfered, I decided a smaller University would be for me. No more classes with 25 to 500 students. I went to one if you get over 25 students it would be a miracle except for certain classes that ALL students have to take like Sociology, psychology, math classes, history, etc etc which are all the general education requirement classes. Even those they try to keep under 30 students. Its a nice change and whenever I take a class, its so much easier to work one on one with that Professor.

I have to say that the last people to blame are the teachers. I honestly believe that learning starts in the home and ends with the student. I didn't wait for my boy to get to school to learn to read, or to begin math...I am his father and that is my job. Jake loves to learn because it is something we do as a family. I hope when as he progresses he loves to learn just for him.

If you are 18 and don't have a learning diability yet still cannot read, then the parents and the students have no one to blame but themselves.

It is not a teachers duty to force a student to learn or behave...it is their duty to help those that want to learn.

And no, I am not a teacher!

As a junior in the mid 80's, I had a job grading freshman English papers. I was horrified then. I can't imagine what they're like now.

On a side note (Doc), if not for that job and my sponsor also teaching English Lit, I wouldn't have made it. Give me physics - Lit was my weak spot.

I went to Catholic schools. :0 The Nuns had God on their side, and they used it to their advantage. :whistling: We learned in spite of ourselves ;)

Doc.

I have to say that my high school, which I only graduated from a few years back, was a public school and we had excellent teachers. Anymore however with advanced classes in high school a kid can push to learn as much as "they" want. I took as many AP classes as I could, and because of that I learned a great deal. OSSM is a program we have that stands for Oklahoma School of Science and Math, it is very difficult and I would have around 5-6 hours of homework a night just from that course. I think kids now can learn as much as they want, they are just lazy.

Please, in the name of all that is good and holy, tell us all that this was a joke, or at least that Enlish is not your first language.
I know I may occasionally make grammatical and spelling mis-steps, but come on.

Yea basically, I could be wrong here, but the reason I see kids are becoming exponentially dumber is because parents don’t do anything anymore so the schools have to play babysitter. Well let’s be honest, for the people that needed to be baby sat of course there going to get pissed off and not care because no one likes being babysat. For the people who didn’t need to be babysat but still were, of course there going to, again, get pissed off and not care. And I’m talking about high schools here. If parents would be parents, and the schools would stick to just teaching we wouldn’t have any problems.

My fiance is a pre health advisor at a SUNY college here in Buffalo. She has told me of the appalling number of students (who are wishing to enroll in med schools) that can barely spell, let alone use the correct form of grammar.

I AM scared, having proof read some of their personal statements. I hope personal responsibility and the perceived quality of education can get back to where it used to be, becuase if not we are all doomed if this generation is to lead our country in our golden years!

I think the average high school in the country tries to teach to the middle third of the populace. The top will hopefully be able to figure it out, don't waste time teaching them. Concentrate on the middle so they can work at some factory. Forget the bottom, let McDonalds train them.

As a general rule, we are not racing to get to the moon anymore, there is no larger picture or reason for the students to put forth the effort. Most teens can't see past what they are going to wear or who has already downloaded that song so the can copy it. This is how I perceive it. So, will their be enough people of a sound mind to provide the leadership our communities will need? Will there be trained persons to keep up the U.S. economic supremacy in the newer scientific advanced world of technology? Do I start planning the retirement of an expatriate?

Let's not forget that this is what my grandfather said of the generation in control now, and I am sure his father said it before him. There are a lot of problems in the world today, but if we remember they are all just "noobs" and can still learn, then we can still hold out hope. I know I do.

I have to say that the last people to blame are the teachers.

I've seen teachers while growing up passing people the shouldnt have. I was one of them as well. Not that the teachers and parents didnt try to get through to me. My 8th grade was all F's cuz I didnt care yet I was passed. Friend of mine in the 8th grade got mainly D's and was held back. Go figure...But we took yearly tests that ranked us then against other kids and I always maxed mine out but my friend didnt.

I remember growing up and hte teacher had the power to kick a student out of class and refuse them back in for the rest of the school year. Yes, I seen a couple jackasses go through that and ended up being held back a year in High School. Is it really the teachers? Partially...Partially the Parents...But I would really look at the School Board. Something isnt right.

I watched a friend that had a Bachelor's Degree in Pyschology and a Masters in Educational Psychology decide to get a teacher certificat for High School level in History. Let me tell ya after seeing the bullshit he had to do to get it, oh hell no. It was crazy insane and stupid. Why? School board. Lets over haul that first and if that doesnt work, look at other options. But something has to be done about schools. I already decided years ago if I had kids I would have them in Private school or the best I could find.

As the 40min clip said. We shop around for everything else. Cellphones, bank loans, cars, houses, etc etc etec looking for the best deal for the buck. Why cant we do that for our kid's education?

I whole heartedly agree Mr Peat that the teacher's union and the school boards should be held accountable for much more than they are. I myself saw a lot of things that went wrong with my school as well as others. I just think that if the students (who are responsible for their own actions) and the parents (who are responsible for their children) were more involved, then we would have a better system.
Not all kids are great students, including me. I hated school! And for the most part my grades showed that. However, I made my own bed and now I sleep in it. I had a lot to make up for in hard work when I could have applied myself earlier and skipped it. There are rotten teachers just like there are rotten cops, priests, business people and the likes. Should teachers be held accountable for their actions...yes. But you have to define their jobs first. Raising peoples children for them is not one of them. Who the hell would want to raise 30 children! :D
Could I compete with forien students? Hell no! But rotten teachers or not, that is my fault becuause I chose not to do what was expected of me.

I do agree that private schools are the way to go. I cannot afford that so I supplement Jake's education here at home. But that's my job.

Now off my soapbox!
