So, I’ve been on an Indie rock/pop kick lately and I’ve decided to put together some of my favorites that I like listening to when enjoying a nice smoke, or just mellowing out in general. I’ve put them together on a CD. Whomever is picked can add on songs, if you so desire, pass it to another botls/sotl.

This isn’t really a contest, just an interactive post. Post me the name of someone (other than yourself) that you think will enjoy these songs. Tomorrow, I’ll pick someone to send the CD to, but I won’t reveal who that is. I’ll send them off probably Monday. That will keep the recipient somewhat of a surprise.

Here is the music list, of which some you may know, some you may not:

1. Black Cab – Jens Lekman
2. Stars and Boulevards – Augustana
3. Crooked Teeth – Death Cab for Cutie
4. South Meets Body – Death Cab for Cutie
5. Fond Farewell– Elliot Smith
6. Good People – Jack Johnson
7. Sitting, Wishing, Waiting – Jack Johnson
8. Look what you’ve done – Jet
9. Standing outside a broken phone booth with money in my hand – PRG
10. Ryan Adams and the Cardinals – Let it Ride
11. Yo La Tengo – Autumn Sweater
12. Snow Patrol – Chocolate
13. Over my head – The Fray
14. New Slang – The Shins

I think I would really enjoy listening to instrumental post-rock stuff while smoking like:

Sparrows Swarm and Sing
This Will Destroy You
Explosions in the Sky
Sigur Ros
Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Maybe I will make myself a nice smoking playlist tonight!

Edit*: btw, cool idea! you have some cool songs on your mix there

Death Cab For Cutie is going to be in Baltimore soon. I just saw the dates today and tics go on sale Saturday.

Blue Dragon is a good candidate. He's a real rat bastard ( :p ), but he likes all types of music. :)

I've got tickets to see them in Columbus on the 13th of November! Lolly got them for my birthday. Should be a great show.

And if you like the instrumental stuff, don't forget Mogwai.

Ooh, ooh, and check out Chad VanGallen, and Starlight Mints, and Aquaduct, and Broken Social Scene, and Clap your hands Say Yeah (this week's favorite), and Elf Power, and Mates of State, and The New Pornographers, and the new album from Sufjan Stevens is wonderful...And when are the Shins set to release a new album? And the new Built to Spill album is really good. Not their best but I have been a fan since 1992 so I had to get it.

Hell, I could go on and on.

Um, it's not exactly indie rock if they've never been signed to an indie label...

Also, Jack Johnson?!

"Indie rock" is shorthand for "independent rock", which stems from the fact the artists are generally signed to independent record labels, rather than major record labels. They may also be on no label at all. It is not strictly a genre of music (although the term is often used to reference the sound of specific bands such as Pavement and the bands they have influenced), but is often used as an umbrella term covering a wide range of artists and styles, connected by some degree of allegiance to the values of underground culture, and (usually) describable as rock music.

I guess will just call it a bomb with some pop music!

These days, in the complete DIY era we're in, I think this term fluctuates quite a bit. Besides, what was once "indie" is, in some cases, no longer so by sheer growth and volume. Look at Dischord...they are such a powerhouse now, certainly compared to their beginnings. Ian and gang sure know what the hell they are doing...in addition to ripping off Gang of Four. Lol.

Edited for spelling.

And to add to that, indie rock isn't really a genre at all. It extends from electronica (Xiu Xiu) to folk (Iron and Wine) to straight up punk (The Thermals) - and even to disco (the Hot Chip). Those are all legitimate 'indie rock' bands but have really very, very little in common. The term is way, way too general to describe any type of music, and that whole 'underground' culture thing has really been up-ended and become mainstream by the addition of 'indie rock bands' to Starbucks playlists and 'indie culture' stores like Urban Outfitters and American Apparel popping up in every city.

Indeed. The indie labels are around, but many are not even actual "indie" labels in that their big-brother winds up being WEA or something, or they come along and get bought out by some conglomerate. Happened with several, including the long lost 4AD label, which was once so amazing...and the fact that, back then, their releases on vinyl were always kinda hard to come by. But, Ivo sold it all to Warner and you now find their releases from Borders to Wal-Mart. You also had labels like Sub-Pop who became, well, tragic. Even, as I pointed above, Dischord has degenerated, much like Touch & Go Records, etc. Sad. You don't really have the days of labels like Alternative Tentacles anymore, at least when they first started. Crazy thing to see some kid walking into a "Hot Topic" and walking out with crap we had to search months to get or, more often than not, make ourselves.

Edited to also add...

That said, I'll add to this list anything on the SST label (one of the finest purveyors in all the land), so take your choice of any song by Black Flag, Decendents, All, etc. God Bless Greg Ginn.

14. New Slang – The Shins

The Shins are a great band. If you really like them, look at Modest Mouse. One of my all time favorites.

If you are gonna listen to MM get "A long drive for someone with nothing to think about" or "The fruit that ate itself". The new stuff is good, but way overproduced.

The Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon and Antartica are two very good albums by MM as well. Their most recent album is fairly unimpressive IMO.

Man, Good News For People Who Love Bad News was anthemic to me when I moved to LA three years ago. I really love that album. Though The Moon... and Lonesome... probably are "better."

Check out Magnetic Fields (espcially "Holiday" or "69 love songs" for indie-rock songwriting at its absolute kitchy best!

Oh, by no means is it a bad album. In fact, I am sure it is what they envisioned the enitre time they made their previous music. It is just that after ten or eleven years of shitty basement recorded music you sort of come to expect it. Anything Issac Brock touches is worth giving a listen to. I spent a year after high school travelling around North America in a 80 VW (no I was never EVER a hippie or whatever they call themselves). There probably wasn't a day that went by that my buddy (or buddies if we picked up hitch hikers) and I didn't pop some MM into the stereo. You are right, the music make for an anthem that defines a part of someone's life. It did mine.
