Somewhere, out there.
Living near one of the largest bodies of water in the U.S. sometimes does have its advantages. Many times during the summer there are ships that call on the port here that you don't see very often. This week is one of those times. We have a replica of the Nina, one of the ships sailed to the New World by Columbus all those years ago. This is supposedly the most historically accurate reproduction out there, so it was important for me (the lone history buff in the family) to go see it.

Unfortunately, they were charging $5 for a tour and the ability to get close enough to get detailed pictures. I would have been happy to give them a donation for a tour, but I refuse to pay for the ability to get decent photos. (Especially when they're selling postcards for $3 ea. and the city is paying them to be here.) On principle, I skipped the tour. (A great example of my bullheadedness according to my wife. :) ) Most of the time one of these ships comes around they tie up behind the arena and you can get very good and close photos. This time they docked in a private marina. :( Needless to say, they weren't selling many tours. The group you see in the pictures was from a local group home that they let on for free.

I did, however, risk life and limb by going out onto someone's slip to get some mediocre photos. I almost fell into the frigid waters of the Duluth Harbor and I had to adjust for the brightness/contrast a little (my camera stinks in anything but very bright sunlight) but I would still like to share with you all a couple of the photos:

The ship itself. It was much smaller than I anticipated. I can't believe they crossed the ocean in this thing!

The rigging and so forth. You can almost make out the "Nina" on the white flag.

My son took some pretty good shots with his little camera, too. My wife wouldn't let him walk out onto the slip with me, though.

I hope someone enjoys these. :)
