So I was invited out to a herf with some co-workers. One guy I knew and a bunch of people he knew. I get to the place and some guys that I don't know are already there smoking away happily. I notice they're smoking Cohiba Pirámide LE's and I'm thinking "wow, these guys are hard core smokers". I don't think much else of it and I sit down and light up my CAO Sopranos Boss. Later as the evening goes on, the story comes out about how the guy bought the Cohibas.

"So I'm down in Cuba and we take a day trip to Havana. A guy comes up to me on the street and says he has a great deal, so I go back to his apartment and he's got ALL these different boxes of cigars! I got a great deal, $100 for the entire box of 25 cigars"

Right away I know they're fake, but another guy at the HERF immediately pipes up and says:

"Oh great deal, these are real Cohibas!"

So what am I to say at this point? I feign that I'm impressed and asked to see the box. There's no factory code on the box, the seals aren't there. Then I open the box and look at the cigars themselves. Guess what? It's a Pirámide shape but the special edition band says Edicion Limitada 2004.

So should I let the guy know he has fakes?

HOW DO PEOPLE STILL FALL FOR THIS CRAP?????

Short answer...don't say anything.
Long answer: These guys aren't going to become your new smoking buddies, from the sound of it, and you would jsut sound like a newcomer to the party handing out advice. If you become friends with them, then, maybe. Fakes can be good cigars, but here are all the reasons that these cigars aren't what they CLAIM to be.

.....So should I let the guy know he has fakes?
Rather than say something like "nice move dumbass", you could allow him to discover it for himself. Something like; "...ya know, those bands look different than the LE's I've seen in the past. Let's do some comparisions and a little research on line....". If he could come to the conclusion that he bought fakes on hims own (with a little help and guidance from you), that's maybe the best answer you could ask for.

Of course, if you don't really like the guy and he IS a dumbass, you have a fallback to option #1..... :p

Rough situation, being that you only knew one of them, and the rest where his buddies, I'd just let it go.

He'd probably just be pissed at ya for making him look bad.

Lose lose situation really.

Let it go. Like Smokelaw said, these guys aren't going to become your smoking buddies. You'll just piss them off if you try and prove to them they got jipped. I'm sure they will get defensive and attempt to prove you wrong, even though you're right.

I’d let it go, its just easier that way. You never know how people will react. I’ve meet plenty of people who have smoked “Cubans” and I just nod and move on. I even meet a guy who paid 30$ for a machine made Cuban that runs 8$. At least it was a legit.

Well I asked my buddy what I should do. He suggested to politely inform the guy so I dropped him an email. He replied back and he seems ok. He said now he can give them to his father in law without worry. He's a bit pissed that he got ripped off, but he's happy I let him know what to look for.

Funny, in his email to me he said "That probably also explains the rough taste that I still have in my mouth this morning."

Well at least he didn't blow up.

I bet you could refer him to a couple of threads we have had here about what do look for in a fake and maybe even give him a viable overseas source ;)
