Very cool. Only thing they missed that I've been wanting is a way to share these photos with other iPod Photo owners that are near you via Bluetooth wireless connection.

No CF card slot to transfer photos? Then it would be a great tool for digital photographers. I'm not sure I see the use of it just as a display item. Are there a lot of people dying to show people their photos on a tiny 220x176 screen?

Now that being said, if you just look at it as a color iPod with better battery life, I might be tempted to upgrade.

There is no "CF slot" because there is no standard for memory cards for digital cameras. A third party does make a "media reader" for it tho, which reads a number of different card formats (different sized slots).

The resolution of the screen is about the same as the resolution of most screens on digital cameras. You can also hook the iPod photo up to a TV (or any video device) and have it display a slide show (with any music that's on the iPod playing during it of course). Pretty cool.
 
I stand by my unimpressed response. :)

Seems mostly an excuse to get me to spend another $500 on a new ipod. Not enough new features to be worth it for me.
 
Can I get one in one of those MLM scams where you have to sign people up for useless items..........or magazines...........or email accounts............or..........maybe.........baby furniture.......... :0

Seriously..............What's the vitals on this thing, my son is interested in an ipod now. He has had two or three other MP3 Juke box things, but is wanting to go strictly with ipod/itunes. And me.......being the super dad that I am...........am considering getting him one...........but not until he cleans that f&%$n' room :p

If you don't want the photo viewing/saving/slideshow capabilities, just get a regular iPod -- they are cheaper. The coolest feature of the iPods for me anyway is that they act as a portable hard drive. I copy work to bring to/from the office every day.

For people who want a more rugged iPod for exercise, hiking, etc., the iPod Mini is the best choice -- metal body, and it's very light.

Thank you...but my Sony Sports Walkman (w/cassette) is still pumping Oingo Boingo, Missing Persons, and Soft Cell just fine......

Besides, you can't record LPs or 8 tracks on to an ipod :p

That does look pretty cool. Let me make sure I have this, there is a media reader that allows the iPod photo to pull data off off cards? That would be very useful for your digicam when on long trips. Even though high capacity CF cards have gotten dirt cheap, cameras keep reaching new MP ratings. A 40 GB iPod would be a good way to avoid buying a bunch of 1 GB CF cards for long vacations.

I burned through a 512 CF card in no time on a trip to the Arboretum on Saturday and that was with an older 4 MP camera. The iPod photo isn't much more than other portable photo storage solutions and is the best MP3 player on the market to boot. That is true added value.

What has Apple done about battery issues though, this was the player's Achilles Heel for the longest time..

That's the idea... a tool isn't useful unless people can use it. Yes, it is part of my gig.

What Apple has always excelled at is excellent human interface, both in their software and in their hardware. The iPod is no different. There are other products out there that offer similar technical specs, but they are just painful to use. The iPod is brilliant in its simplicity.

As for the battery issue, I guess that depends on what you mean. For me, an 8 hour charge is more than enough for an mp3 player. I just dock it when I'm not using it. The newer ones do have a longer battery life though.

The media reader was designed for the original iPod. I wonder if you will actually be able to see the photos you transfer onto a photo iPod. For that matter I wonder if the media reader will still even work.

If you want to digitally store your old analog music collection then there is the Audio Director from MSB Tech. It will convert up to 8 analog inputs to 24/96 digital. With almost 2500 vinyl albums it is something I've been thinking of for a while now.
 
At $500.00 for the ipod photo and $100.00 for the reader you could buy a lot of cards for your camera. Does anyone think there is going to be a big market willing to pay an extra $200.00 for a carry around photo album?
