I spent some time in Pasadena last weekend. On my way home I stopped by a little shop of Colorado st. to first find and then purchase some more Opus X. After searching a while on my own I asked the well dressed clerk what they had if any. It turned out they have at least a box of most of the vitollas. However when I asked the price for the robusto and power ranger his reply sent me off guard "$20.00 and $21.00." I replied "Isn't that a bit steep, like 100% over MSRP steep?" Now I expect to pay more for these, especially in southern California. But isn't a 100% mark-up a bit crazy here? The clerks expression made me feel worse about it too. He looked at me like I was a looser and questioned my remark with a sarcastic "...Steep? really?"

Oh well, I'll keep looking online for more.

Well, isn't your tobacco tax obscene out there in CA? So, you have to factor that aspect in as well. Not knowing what Opus goes for in other shops in Cali, I don't know if it would be considered steep, but I'm sure the tax has a lot to do with that.

Opus X MRSP -- and also tobacco tax by state. CA's tax is 46.76% of the cost to the distributor, so not including sales tax, here's what we have:

Opus X Robusto MSRP = $11.00

The cost to the distributor about half that, or $5.50 x 46.76% = $2.53. Now what many retailers do is they take the price they pay, add in the taxes, and then double it to reach their sale price, so we'll take our cost to the tobacconist of $8.03 per cigar, double it to $16.06 and that would be about what you'd expect them to be selling for.

So it looks like they added a few bucks on top, unless the price you mentioned included state sales tax. Note that the aforementioned figures are just approximations, different vendors handle how they calculate the taxes into their prices differently.

MN tax is 80% wholesale. One of the highest in the nation. I bought an Opus Robusto a little over a week ago for $14.99. Perhaps you should have told the clerk to "gfy".

Thanks for the info Moki. So, according to your numbers, what I paid at my local for my Opus' when they arrived this past delivery wasn't too bad... xXx was $11 plus sales tax.

So, using your method, MSRP $9.25, half is $4.625. Add in the 37% of the wholesale price for the NY rate ($1.71), and I come up with $6.34. So, he's adding a little less than 75% to that price, less than the double you said many retailers do.

Yeah just keep in mind it's a rough guide... the *way* that tobacco taxes are collected, and on what, varies from state to state, not just the percentage. Some is based on wholesale price. Some is based on distributor price. Some base it on retail price. It's a mess really, but you can get a rough idea.

Man, i'd be happy to pay around $20.
I bought 2 Opus X in January, one was robusto size, forgot which one......$30.
the one I still have is the Reserva D'chateau and I paid $35 for one of them.

Moki thank you for your e-mail, I'll try to talk to my guy but he said they never order any. the only place I know is in santa monica, that's where i bought mione.

oh well, maybe some day

sascha

From what I have seen, at the few, shops in CA that have had Opus, they don't care what MSRP is or what us online guys think because they will have no problem selling them at whatever price they ask. At $10 or $30, they will still sell. The thing that I really hate is that most shops wont sell a whole box. I hate fresh ones so I will never buy Opus from a shop in CA.

Wow, maybe I should have bought a few more Opus Robustos before my local B&M ran out at $9.99 per stick. I smoked one right away (not bad), and stuck several down in the bottom of the humi for a little sleepy-time.

that's why I don't wanna buy here as well, I would love a whole box from somewhere, but it's really hard to track down

If I ever see anything with that price, the box would be mine ;)

search for a recent Opus thread that was in this forum, and you'll find a source for Opus around $15 ea.
