Not sure if this should go in buy/sell since it is not cigar related...

I want to purchase a used telescope (don't have too much to spend). I owned a 60mmX700mm refractor but sold it for $30 because I want something bigger. I am looking for at least a 114mm reflector. With my old one I couldn't see any characteristic of planets, or anything else really except for the moon. Let me know if you have one you want to sell.

Thanks

I wouldn't go lower than a 6" reflector. If you opt for a Dobsonian, there are lots of good values out there.

Check out the Orion Skyquest 6" or 8" Classic models. Very reasonably priced.

Also, check www.astromart.com if you are interested in purchasing a pre-owned telescope. The site is used by amateur astronomers around the world.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks for the tips. I really want a 6"+ but cannot afford one. I have been watching craigslist for a while now and have found a few 4.5" for around $100 which really is even a little more than I can spend.

My first one was $60, sold it for $30 and I have about $50 lying around I can add to it too, so right now I have around 80-90.

I have that site book marked now so I will check it periodically.

I have actually thought about making a Dobsonian as well but at 8" primary is over $200 alone...

Thanks

You're welcome and if I can be of any help just send me an email or pm.

If I were you, I'd hold off investing in the smaller scope, save for a bit and get the 6" or larger when finances allow.

Like everything else, it's a slippery slope. I have eyepieces that cost more than my telescope but they are great and I don't regret 'em a bit. The main thing is to buy the best quality that your budget will allow without going overboard.

Unless you are buying local, shipping costs will be a big percentage of this purchase ... especially for a 6" scope or larger.

Have you checked out the local astronomy clubs? Many have free loaner programs for members.
Knowing local amateur astronomers would also gain you access to other sources for used scopes and parts.

BTW, don't discount moon observation. Our closest neighbor in space has many interesting features and some have spent a lifetime looking, drawing, photographing, etc.

I'm not saying I didn't like the moon, I thought it was facinating. I probably spent a good 2 hours looking at it. However, Jupiter and Venus were out too!

My friends brother made a 6" and said he would want $500 for it!

Guess I'll keep saving and looking.
