Jaguar spotted

Spoke with my brother last night, just recently moved to Arizona, and he said the night before there was a large jaguar walking on his brick wall in the back yard. The cat was gone before he had a chance to take a picture. His neighbor wants to shoot the animal, i told my bro to report it and most likely it would be relocated. The sister-in-law is scared out of her wits. From what my brother says this cat is hanging around the development and was spotted crouching near a backyard with kids playing playing. Damn shame, you know it will be killed. There should be a moritorium on development near these areas where predators live. What to do? :angry:
 
I don’t know much about jaguar’s but most wild animals including predators won’t attack humans unless provoked (ie his neighbor trying to shoot it). But if they have small pets, they might become dinner.
 
I think there are more hen's teeth in AZ than Jags. Probabaly highly protected as well. Chance in a lifetime sighting though.

There are jaguars in Arizona. If your brother really did see it, he probably wont again. Where does he live? Are you sure he knows what he is looking at? Far more likely to have seen a mountain lion. Jaguars are protected and if he shoots it he'll probably go to jail. Report the siting to the fish and game department. They'll take care of it if it is a problem.

Pretty easy to tell a jaguar from a Puma (mountain lion). One has spots, the other doesn't. Here's a good site for info: http://www.agarman.dial.pipex.com/bco/ver4.htm The site doesn't show pumas in Illinois, but I've heard tell that there are a few around. Just like the few found in Florida (panthers, but similar to pumas). My brother in law worked in the Everglades and said there were rangers there who'd been around their whole life who have never seen one they were in places they should have. They can be really elusive. I'd be worried with small children around as well as pets. If it's in a residential neighborhood it's not there to site-see. It's probably been driven into there searching for food.

Bingo..... Fish and Game Department without question. If they have any reason to believe the animal is in the area they will (should) attempt to trap it. Do not shoot it unless it is endagering a human life. Walking across peoples back yards is not endagering human life.

PS - I wouldn't let Fifi outside for a bathroom break at night by herself......lol!
 
I spoke with my bro and gave him the number to the wildlife service or whatever it's called, he is sure it's a jaguar, his neighbor brought out a book with pictures of all the big cats in the area. I guess it's been in the area for a while now, hope everything works out for the jaguar. I think the neighbor is more of a problem then the cat. Beaver Dam in Arizona is where my brother lives now.
