A bomb from garrettbuckey put a bottle of Jameson 12 on my doorstep a few weeks ago and as promised here is the review.

Jameson 12 yo Blended Irish Whiskey, 750 ml, 80 proof, may or may not have tube packaging, about $28-35, available nationwide.

A nice enough night found me on the deck with a glass of Jameson in hand and a Gurkha Legend for afterwards. Jameson was founded in 1780 and is the best selling Irish Whiskey in the world producing over 2 million cases a year. Oddly enough it was founded by a Scotsman John Jameson who married into the Haig family which happened to own a distillery on Bow street Dublin. John Jameson acquired this distillery in 1780 and named it after himself. It is now owned by the French firm of Pernod Ricard.

Jameson is made from both malted and unmalted Barley that is dried in coal fired kilns which imparts no additional flavors like peat would do. As with most Irish Whiskey it is triple distilled in pot stills which is a slower form of distillation then coffey stills used to make bourbon for example.

Jameson is a light golden color in the glass and even with the green glass bottle, one can see it isn't much darker in the bottle. It noses soft ripe fruit (peaches?) with oak, spices and a touch of leather in the background. The taste is smooth, very smooth with cinnamon, sherry and malt all swirling about. The finish is very long and seems to take place on the roof of the mouth which is a bit unusual. Peppery notes are the primary flavor in the finish with a little bit of oak.

While Jameson is considered one of the best blends available for the money I don't find anything that really stands out. Nothing grabs me as a primary focus of the drink. That may be one of the reasons it is growing so fast, there is nothing to turn off the wide range of drinkers. One could easily drink more of this then would be prudent, it goes down that easy. For me it is an interesting diversion from my normal Scotch or Bourbon and would most likely be enjoyed by the majority of people who tried it.

Thanks for the review. I have tried a bottle of Jameson a while back, and though none of it was wasted I didn't feel the desire to buy more.

Being a huge fan of the Jameson Whiskey, I have to say this one isn't that good. Now if you want a real bottle of Jameson, you pick up the 12yo Jameson that can be bought only at the Jameson Whiskey Museum in Dublin, Ireland or their Distillery. Its Triple Distilled and back in 2001 it sold for around $35 a bottle. I will get a picture pf the empty bottle up another day and if you have any questions regarding its quality, ask OpusXKC. I opened this bottle so we could drink it and I haven't been back to Ireland to replace it. :(

I guess it'll make a nice decoration! I'm a scotch drinker myself AVB. I was just hoping to find you something a little different. St. Patty's comes once a year... after a few pints of Guinness... the Jamies gets better, I promise!
