Jerry Lee Lewis performed at a record store a block from where I work today. You buy his new cd ("Last Man Standing") and get a wristband to be let in for the performance. It's a "duets" cd, but has a very cool list of participants.

I found out his birthday is this Friday and I saw a lot of photos of him with a cigar so I brought one along in case I got close enough to him. Also brought along an old Sun 45 of "Whole Lot Of Shakin" to try to get autographed.

Anyway... he looked a little bit frail but... 40 years melted away when he got behind the piano. MAN! He still rocks. HARD! He played "Roll Over Beethoven", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Great Balls Of Fire", Whole Lot Of Shakin'", and 1 or 2 others.

He's quickly led out to an SUV and I work my way right up to his window and wave around my Sun 45, asking him to sign it. He makes a feeble attempt to open the window but doesn't, and indicates "Sorry."
Then I remember the cigar.

I whip it out and hold it up and say "Happy Birthday Killer."
BOOM! The window comes down and he gladly accepts the cigar. I hold out the record again and other folks start pushing cd's at him to sign and, smiling, he says to me "I can't sign all these autographs."
So I say "But you sure can play that piano."
The car window goes up, the car pulls away, and that's that!
Guess I'll go home, light up and listen to the new disc.

Oh yeah... the smoke I gave him was a RP Vintage '92 in a sealed glass tube from a box of 10 that I got from a CI deal months back.

Great story to tell the kids when they ask for one while you're putting them to sleep. Jerry was my first R&R star and i loved him. It's great that he can still enjoy a stogie at his age. Thanks! :D

Jerry Lee Lewis update!
I'm a video editor at the Today show in NYC and this morning the Killer performed on the show. I work late hours so I was at home asleep during it.
The fellow that produced the performance segment knew of my story about JLL not autographing my record last month and managed to to get him to sign it for me this time around!
When handed the 50 year old 45 rpm disc, the Killer commented "That's an original." and I'm told that he was a real pleasure to hang and chat with while off camera.

Great ending to a great story! Congrats on the autograph your co-worker is the best!

I can't believe I don't have any Jerry Lee Lewis on my hard drive. Time to go pick up a few CD's.
