After seeing several favorable reviews of the Juan Lopez Epicure #1, I decided to try it for myself. I should preface this review by saying that I am not a huge fan of Nicaraguan puros (outside of 1964's and 1926's). But this stick came very highly recommended, so I figured I would give it a go.

Here it goes:

Juan Lopez Epicure #1
6 x 54
Nicaraguan Puro
MSRP: $5.50; Paid: $5.00

Initial inspection showed a very nice box-pressed maduro. The wrapper was silky smooth and the stick was firm. The pre-light draw was very open; enough that it was cause for initial alarm.

Upon lighting, the cigar produced lots of rich, sweet, chocolate flavor and tons of smoke. This flavor lasted for about the first 1/3 of this cigar and as it progressed hints of burning wood began grow stronger. The burn was even and that ash was white and solid. By the middle of the stick, the sweet notes were completely gone leaving only the earthy, woody flavors. Not that these were bad flavors, but they were one dimensional and rather ordinary.

The final 1/3 was the worst. All the inital flavors gave way to a very charred taste. The open draw began to catch up with the cigar and it began to tunnel.

I have to say that I was disappointed in this smoke. Although, I would be willing to try another in hopes that a better draw might improve things.

I look forward to hearing what others have to say!
