Kansas Day!

Hold on, you're being relentless about this. Is there anything I can tell you what's on my mind before we close these closet chronicles?

I hope you had fun with this, and maybe learned a little something about boring old Kansas :)

Ok, the moment you have all been waiting for...

Peekay wins!

1: Only one county in Kansas is named for a woman. Who was she? What was her claim to fame?

Clara Barton, Founder of the American Red Cross

2: This famous botanist lived in several towns in Kansas, he graduated from Minneapolis High School, and operated a laundry there. Who was he?

George Washington Carver

3: Pizza Hut had it's beginnings in Wichita, where is the original Pizza Hut located now? (Hint: it has been moved from it's original location)

Wichita State University campus

4: On a related note. Another very popular fast food chain has it's roots in Wichita, but no longer is represented there. What chain is it?

White Castle (shame ain't it? I love those things!)

5: At one time Hutchinson had two structures that were the largest in the world. (both have been surpassed) They are not related. Name them.

Worlds longest grain elevator
, and tallest television tower. I have been totally unable to find that information on the web. I recall a sign on the highway stating the fact. (years ago).

6: The Kansas motto is "ad astra per aspera". What does it mean?

"To the stars through difficulties"

7: My favorite band is Kansas. Who is the man on the cover of thier first album (that was before CD's kids)? Who is the artist? And where is the original?

John Brown, the artist is John Steuart Curry and the original piece of art is in the rotunda of the state capitol at Topeka

8: The University of Kansas has a rich sports history. This man is credited with inventing and then becoming the first coach of what game?

Dr. James Naismith, basketball

9: Kansas has been home to several television stars, Don Johnson (Miami Vice)and Kirstie Allie (Cheers, etc) grew up in Wichita. A woman from Cherryvale made it to the big time, who was she? What show was she most famous for?

Vivian Vance, Ethyl Mertz on "I love Lucy"

10: Recently a man who was arguably the United States fierciest enemy was in Lindsburgh KS, who was he? Why was he there?

Mikhail Gorbachev for chess for peace

Thanks for playing!

All I'm gonna say is the group "Kansas" is a kick ass rock and roll band.

I have always liked them since I first saw them very early in their career. I saw them in 1973 or 74 when the backed up Mott The Hoople, and they put on a great foot stompin show.

Awesome contest gandolf. Hardest question to answer was the cover art for kansas. I had to find online liner notes, find the designer, google the designer, find the painter, google the painter... and find the name of the painting. Then google the painting to find it's origins!!!

The chess for peace was a hard one to... had to pull up archives of the local news to find it.

It's pretty amazing what you can find on the net with some digging.
