Looks like NO dodged the first major bullet - just a couple hours before Katrina touched land just to the south east of NO about an hour ago, the pressure was up enough to slow it down slightly. It was downgraded to a Cat 4 (still, just barely under a 5 though @ 150 mph with a possibility to speed up again), and it looks like it's going to get hit by the west side of the eye instead of the more dangerous upper right side.
The bad news is that the most dangerous threat - the flooding - is still coming. With 20-50 foot waves (Buoy is reporting 46 footers already) on top of 20-30 foot surges still on the way, the power in the French Quarter just went out and roofs have already begun to tear off buildings with the winds only @ about 70-75mph. The worst is still 70 miles to the south south/east and moving north right to the east of NO. Just try to imagine it's going to keep this up for at least 12 hours, and get a lot worse as it goes on...
