Keeping a log

I've got a log going. I tape the band in and write the date, vitola, cost or gifter, duration, beverage, location, activity, and company as applicable. Sometimes I have just a word or two, other times I have a few sentences worth of description to add. I find it helpful since I'm only a little over a year into the hobby. I don't keep notes or anything (unless I'm doing a review) while smoking, and sometimes it gets a little annoying when I leave a few to do all at once, but all in all it's definitely better than bad--it's good!
 
I keep one because while I havent smoked many cigars right now, I know ill forget which ones did what a few months down the road. Im in the stage of trying all kinds of things so id be pretty ticked if I forgot a bunch that I really liked. I sure dont stress or make a big fuss about it. I enjoy my smoke then write a little blurb in a notebook about it afterwards.
 
After reading this post and going through my few log entries that I made a while back...it reminds me why I created stogienotes. I have a horrible memory when it comes to trying to remember if I liked something or not. I probably should at least start making a note of SOME kind when I smoke something new so I remember if I at least liked it enough to buy it again or if it was something I'll want to forget about. I think I might have to start making some kind of notes after I finish a new cigar and I'm done enjoying it, at least just to remind myself of how awesome or piss poor it was.
 
I am sticking to what I said about logging but I did take some time tonight to label a bunch of my singles. It took a significant amount of effort but I think it was worth it. Now I speak more intelligently about my likes and dislikes. When I pick up an Anejo I will immediately know its the #50 versus one of the other variety. So its more for my continued education more than anything else. I am expecting my Vinotemp drawers in a few days. So this will definitely come in handy with a large singles drawer. If I can just keep the moochers out!

I developed my own review database for the same reason. If you are constantly trying many different cigars, it's hard to remember what you liked or disliked...or what they tasted like for that matter (especially those you tried a year ago). It's nice to review your ratings/notes when looking at sales, etc; it gives you info on what you should consider buying and for how much. I only review a cigar once (maybe update after a year or so for consistency notes). Of course, everyone has their favorites for which they need no reminder. I am just looking for a lot of favorites :) .
