Well here goes my feeble attempt at a review.
Setting: My folks house in their lush backyard.
View: Fairly cloudy, and happily enjoying the time watching my mom and my son play video games on their big screen through the glass door.
Cigar: The ever so sexy La Aurora 1495 - stored for 3wks (from Date of purchase) @ 68˚F/70%RH
-Country of Origin: Dominican Republic
-Strength: Medium to Full
-Wrapper: Ecuadorian
-Binder: Dominican
-Filler: Dominican, Nicaraguan, Peruvian
-Size: Robusto (5 x x50)
Pairing: Some random coffee brewed by my folks
Clipped the cap with my trusty Palio, quick effortless draw revealed some slight spice and toasted almond profiles. Initially I thought that this was going to be a somewhat spicier La Aurora blend than previous LA's that I had the privilege of smoking. My mouth already salivating (as I have rarely been let down from any La Aurora) I toasted the foot and the first impression I thought was how smooth and balanced the blend was. Voluminous clouds of smoke produced with just enough resistance to the draw, never over bearing with more rich nutty flavors beginning to reveal themselves as I inch my may towards the first third of the cigar. The aroma was extremely pleasing as I picked up very subtle hints of fruit (not sure exactly which kind) throughout the smoke. My GF, who came out for a quick smoke even complimented on how pleasant the aroma from the cigar was and coming from her that was HUGE, considering she absolutely hates the smell of cigars. The core flavor was slightly sweet and nutty almost caramel-like which lasted the whole length of the cigar. The solid white ash held on for about 1.5in before meeting the ashtray. The flavor profile hardly changed throughout the cigar but that's not to say it was boring with taste. Every puff reminded me exactly why I began to take this hobby seriously, the blissful experience of enjoying the calm while my senses meditated on the aroma of the cigar. The second and third part of the cigar were very similar to each other with a minimalistic pinch of spice that crept up just after removing my lips from the head of the cigar. The smoke almost teased my palette with a licorice-like taste, that never fully came about. I was quite surprised at the burn as I tend to somewhat rush every draw I take but this cigar always kept up with me. Not once did I have to correct or purge the cigar to get an even burn, I felt like I just discovered the internet porn for the first time, I was so amazed and giddy. There was never a moment of harshness that peaked while smoking this cigar, even while trying to "roll" the smoke through my nose (I haven't quite perfected the art of rolling as I am only trying this on cigars with a more mild or medium body). An extremely satisfying smoke to say the least as I try to savor every last puff before re-entering the house. At last the finale of a great smoke, I lay the cigar and watch it slip into its abyss.
As a side note I find that I enjoy most La Aurora blends at a more generous 68-70% RH. I believe the extra moisture allows the blend to marry well, I have no scientific way of proving this except that I have tried the cien anos, the cameroon robusto, Preferidos 1495 and the regular production 1495 at both a 65% RH and a 70% RH and in my experience they tend to smoke with a more "healthy" flavor.
