Like a few said already , Dell has great deals at times. You just have to wait for the right moment. I was able to score this.

As for a cam, I wouldn't get one built in. I have one in mine, and it sucks.

Here's what I'm thinking about. I added an extra year to the warranty (was $774). Thoughts anyone?

Hi

I have a Dell and I have been very happy with that. I bought one with a big screen as I use it mainly around the house. But I do travel with it from time to time :-) I even named it...it is called "Bjarne the 5th"

Had a really bad storm and our desktop will do nothing now. I opened it up and it's definitely getting power, however when I hit the power button....nothing. Maybe just the switch? I dunno. Anyone have any ideas?

Anyways, thinking about getting another on the 'ol CCity card and have been looking at some of the systems they have. Gateway, HP/Compaq, and two I've not heard of...Cyberpower and iBUYPOWER. Any of the pooter gurus on here have any knowledge they can give on any of these systems? Looking for one that can play movies (I'll be upgrading the video/sound card), games, and will hold about oh....a million pictures. Prolly put about $600 or so on it...

Back to school time at CC and we always had deals going on. Take your old desktop there, because they are doing a free PC health check, but would probably charge you $60 for a diagnostic if it doesn't boot. Otherwise, you should be able to get a decent desktop for $600 or so.

For a new user, I would think that a mac would be top of my list. A good deal on a computer is only a good deal if you use it. Likewise, for a general home user, there are no application restrictions (like MS Project, which has no Mac version).

buy.com often has good laptop deals as well. It might be worth looking at your requirements. If she wants a 17-inch laptop, she's essentially buying a desktop replacement. If she's working from a static location, a desktop is going to be cheaper, faster, and easier to adjust to her ergonomics.

I just picked up a used HP nc6400 laptop for $400 on eBay, only a few dollars more than I sold my old Dell D410 for. As Windows laptops go, however, I can't recommend Lenovo/IBM too highly - I owned four of them in a row while working as a consultant, which is a pretty good track record. They do come with a price premium, though.
