El Martillo (My Boxing Name)
Well, the Comedy Central South Beach Comedy festival is in full swing here on South Beach. All types and manner of comics are down here for roughly a week or so, and it kind of becomes difficult to figure out which shows to catch.
Last night, ended up getting tickets to go see Josh Blue (the "Last Comic Standing" from the NBC show of that name). Also got tickets to see Hal Sparks later in the evening. Josh Blue was first and I must say, he's a tremendously funny, genuine guy. Got to meet him after the show even. At times, his comedy gets a bit one dimensional (with much of his routine being devoted to his cerebral palsy), but it's still funny as hell nonetheless.
His show ended, hung out backstage a bit, then had about an hour or so until Hal Sparks. Went out to the front of the theater (Colony Theater on Lincoln Rd.) and lit up a stick. Nice little Tatuaje Regios. Sat down with a Segafredo Zanetti espresso from the shop next to the theater and enjoyed my "intermission." Now time for Hal Sparks.
Didn't know much about this guy, outside of seeing him on VH1 "I Love the 80's" series. But he was damn funny too. Some pretty funny material, and very enjoyable. After the show, got to meet him as well and then headed back to the pad (on the beach) and went for a late-night walk (12:15 a.m.) on the beach with a Anejo 77 I've been hibernating for roughly the last two years. Verrrrry nice. Great end to a great night.
Tonight, Jon Stewart. Really looking forward to that. Followed by an after-party for the majority of the comedians at one of the many sweet hotels on the beach. Will be interesting to see who I bump into. Kinda sucks that so many other comics were put up at different venues at the same times. Jim Bruer (SNL's "goat-boy") is here too, as was, of all people, Andrew Dice Clay. Haven't even thought about him since the hickory-dickory-dock days of...what was it?...1987? Where's he been since Ford Fairlane, Casual Sex, etc.? Anyway, he was here too. So far, it's been great fun, coupled with great cigars.
