El Martillo (My Boxing Name)
So last night we decided to head north from our haven of South Beach and went with some friends of ours to a little steakhouse in Coral Springs called Runyon's. I think it might really be the only place to eat in Coral Springs, outside of fast-food joints. But brothers, I tell you, it's one hell of a place. Wayyyy, too far north for my blood, but dam* fine none the less. Sat outside in the courtyard and lit up some extraordinary Partagas 150's that were enjoyed by all, especially some lovely ladies enjoying some cocktails just inside the bar (much to the displeasure of my wife).
After some outstanding, HUGE, cut to order filet, plenty of wine (no single malt as I had to drive), we headed to Ft. Lauderdale to the evening's main event: Mr. Tony Bennett live at the Au Rene Theater/Broward Center for Performing Arts.
Dam* what a show. First, it was a just a quartet supporting him - upright bass, piano, drums and guit. Very small, very intimate. He was also in stellar form, honestly, as always. Very personal show as well, as his brother was in the audience, as well as a few friends of his. He performed for roughly 2 hours, maybe a little more. I lost count actually.
Mingling outside after the show, waiting for the valet to bring the car around, had time for a tasty (Bolivar) robusto that brought over some FOG's and brought up talk of hanging out cornerside in Astoria, Brooklyn, the docks, what have you and it was a dam* good time.
Driving home, wife falling asleep in the passenger seat, left over glory from the cigar smoke wafting up from my suit, a million sparkling lights of Miami shining down below as I hit the high-rise HOV lane of I-95 south heading back to the pad on South Beach, "Wee Small Hours" gently rising from the speakers....it was an excellent night brothers. Just had to share it.
