Last Tattoo I did on a guy

Maybe someone in this thread can explain to me: what possesses somebody to get a Harley Davidson Motorcycle? Especially the ones that are "dark"? I am not downing the whole trend, I just don't get it. And I genuinely want to understand.

Why would anybody do that?

JK

PS - The tattoo thing I fully understand, although I don't have one and I'm not dogging RobK with his post, even though I copied it...  I truly need to know...

I have friends of mine that are "Normal" who live, breath, eat, sleep Harley Davidson.  One of my friends ONLY wears Harley Davidson clothes - and his girlfriend hates his wardrobe...  I can't see inviting this guy to a dress up social event - he'd go nuts!!!

The reason I ask is because these same "normal" friends want me to purchase a HD to ride with them.  The problem I have is if it is as addicting as I've seen, it will destroy me if I walk down that path...  These guys drive me nuts with their constant tweaking, upgrading, trading, buying, etc...  Kinda like the cigar thing...  Is there any way to have a Harley Davidson without getting hugely obsessed?

Let me 1st say that I just ride one because I love to RIDE. And I ride alone. And the only motorcyle that makes sense to me, for many reasons, is the Harley. Some of those reasons being: American, Investment, comfort, Loud=safe, and of course style. There are only 2 colors for an HD... Black and Wrong!!

Now to answer your question. These people you talk of are called "Hoggy Doggies" by the People that work on thier bikes. I sort of have a theory about why "They" have Harleys. I call it the "Mines Bigger Than Yours" theory. One of the big reasons I got out of the field. They were always trying to show me how thiers was "bigger" so to speak. Always trying to out do the next guy or ME. Always trying to look cool. Always calling me BRO. And when they smoked cigars they never held the smoke in thier mouth and they always showed up with fake Cubans.

But, to an extent, every new Harley owner will go through a period like this. Some are definetly worse than others. I probably did too a little bit in the beginning although I was pretty young and I remember being "Schooled" by the more "Experienced" bikers. And I also remember always thinking "**** you!" in my head. Now the only tweaking that I will do to one of my bikes is motor work or something that will enhance the bikes performance. After all, "Chrome Don't Get You Home!"

And as far as tattoos hurting? I was always a sick MF and thought that they felt good and know of several others that think so too. People that are INTO tattoos usually like the way they feel when they get them. It is an addicting feeling. It releases adrenaline or endorphines or some **** like that.

Hey George, here's a tat I did a few months back:

Yes, it's only a hobby and I rarely get to do it as I don't have much (if any) spare time. I presently have about 30 people that are waiting for me to be "available" to work on them. Btw, nice work Atuck!

Guys,

Thanks for all the interesting responses to my question. It is nice to see we can still have a civilized discussion around here. One thing I gleaned relates to the permanent nature if tattoos; this is the part I really didn't understand, why would someone do something they can't undo? However, as Stevehawk said, this can be a plus if you are looking to demonstrate commitment!

The Harley thing is a little more relatable to me, cause motorcycles are just cool. Unfortunately, my Mom's brother died riding a bike when his helmetless head when up against a tree and the tree won. So no motorcycles in my family.

In addition to the tweakers, aren't there a lot of yuppies or boomers or whatever out there that just own one as a status symbol. They really don't get biking culture, the are not really safe drivers, they just do it to be cool. Because I seem to see a lot of that type around here. People on Harleys who just don't look right on a Harley. They don't even look comfortable.

That's probably what I would be if I had one. :) Another reason to not get one.

Alright, back to discussing $20 cigars and $4000 humidors, cause that's a much more reasonable hobby. :D

JK

wow that doesnt even look normal, sort of like a blackhole or something.... As far as bikers, i respect hardcore REAL bikers, as i feel i am one, too. What irks me is those that get one or ride for status. Dont get me wrong, if you ride cause u love to ride, then more power to ya. If u ride so u can be a weekend badass, then.... I get into it with people that ride for the image and the bragging right all the time, but biking is just one of those things that is like cigars. Self time, relaxing, and just living it! Btw, my moms cousin and one of my other uncles were all killed on a motorcycle. My dad fell off and broke his arm, i have another uncle that was killed recently as well. Does this deter me? nah, i just think its in my blood :D

oh yeah, im with atuck on "adrenaline" when it comes to tattoo. I have my family name on my stomach, and YES it was painful! It, too, is very addicting, meaning u keep getting more and more as u go..

A tatoo is something I have always wanted, but I have been waiting for something really meaningful or important. Something worth commemorating has finally happened, but I'm still chicken.

I have been looking at motorcycles again here lately. With gas now at $3+ per gallon, its making it harder and harder to resist getting another one. Riding a motorcycle is one of those great feelings that you just have to experience to understand.
