My friend just had a baby and he has been smoking cigars to celebrate. Seems he created a new hobby for himself since he liked it so much. I've decided that I want to buy him a lighter as a gift. My initial thought was to buy him a zippo with some custom engraving or something. But I was unsure if zippos and cigars mixed well (Is it proper? Do they light evenly? etc). The more I look around on the net and see postings here it seems as if the lighters with the torch-like flame is what is common for cigars. Why is this? Are these type of lighters the best at lighting cigars? Are they the most accepted in a cigar community? I want to give him a nice lighter and do it right so I need your all's help. I really want to give him a nice zippo but is this a bad choice?

Thoughts and/or suggestions please.

Thanks

You got to be kidding me. Try here. I don't think I can bear to say search is your friend any more. Whoops! Oh my god, It's your first post as well. Please find the Intro Forum, and introduce yourself. We'd like to know something about you before you pick our brains.

Doc.

Get a butane lighter, most are the torch type. The butane imparts no flavor (or flavour if you're Canadian, your profile doesn't say) as lighter tluid does. I have one lighter that has a torch flame when you hold it down, like a regular lighter, and then a dual flame like a Zippo would have. I believe you can also get butane inserts for Zippos... While you're here, go over to the introductory room, pull up your chair, say hi to everybody, and stick around for a while!

We rarely bite and you're always welcome....Just introduce yerself and everyone here is very nice.

BTW...i use a three flame torch butane lighter...Some people use cedar strips to light up or wooden matches.

Just depends upon personal preference...But by any means should you EVER light a decent cigar with a zippo-unless of course your buddy is smoking Phillies Blunts

Zippo does make butane torch lighters now too, btw.

I got one of the new Zippo Blu about two weeks ago and I like it so far. Good construction and heft to it, has the Zippo "click" when you open it. Uses the Zippo flint ignition system and has a good size flame(flame size cannot be adjusted, what you see is what you get). The tank hold a good amount of fuel and you have a window to check the fuel level. It has a little more heft to it than my Dupont X-Tend but not too much that you would notice. Also with the lifetime Zippo guarantee you can't go wrong.
