I've posted regarding local smoking ordinance bans before here in several threads. The city of Lincoln, which is 72 miles from me, had a voter approved measure that banned smoking in all public indoor places. This even included tobacconist shops and even cigar bars!. :angry2: One owner tried to circumvent the rule by parking a giant bus in front of his business and ran it on cold days so smokers could use it. Another owner tore a gaping hole between the wall and ceiling so that it could not be an "indoor facility" according to the letter of the law. Well, it turns out that Sen. Pat Bourne of Omaha has sponsored a bill in our legislature that would overturn the bans and prevent local governments from passing anti-smoking measures.  The only bad side is that a state-wide ban would probably result from this pyrrhic victory. ??? ???

On a different note for those who are civically minded-my state is the only one in the union to utilize a unicameral legislature. Click here to read up on why we made it that way.

This just made my day a little bit brighter!. :D :) :)

They couldn't find enough literate folks willing to leave the corn fields to serve in the State Legislature!!!

LOL-Yeah, I think that is mostly true outside of Lincoln and Omaha. The boondocks are just unreal sometimes. :D   In all seriousness though, the change was made to reduce the cost of paying legislators, as well as to reduce partisanship and gridlock in the '30s. Some people want to move back to a bicameral system, but originally the thought was-you have one school board, why would you need a second body? Ditto state government.
