It sucks pretty bad, but at least you can still play a round of golf with a stogie. Can't ban that man, golfers would be pissed.

Technically and lawfully since the parks are not necessarily truly "public" in the sense that they are city maintained an whatnot, I guess it's done under the guise of protecting the public. A thin line though, because the banned smokers are taxpayers too.
They should be obligated to provide a smoking area to represent those taxpayers.

We've got a real problem once they start banning it on the street.

Being a new Long Beach resident, this is a shame. However, it's not altogether unexpected seeing as (as the article states) we are "joining 140 other California communities that have banned lighting up in public outdoor spaces."

Luckily, smoking in & outside of cigar shops here is still permitted and there are several bars with outdoor areas where smoking is permitted (not sure about law but at least by the establishment). It's the little things... ???

WIth no smoking, there will be no butts on the ground...with no butts on the ground, there will be nothing for the town workers to cleanup...with nothing for the town workers to clean up, there will be no need to have them working.

Hello higher unemployment!

IDIOTS!

I can't remember the last time California or any of its cities let go of a gov't worker. :(

They'll just find a way to 'repurpose' them.

This ban crap is going to a new level. Its like the new "prohibition", but instead of alcohol its this. My wife and I went to a local bar/restaurant the other day for dinner. It used to be packed all the time, and this time it was almost entirely empty.

We went to the casino for sweetest day, to eat and gamble a bit, and paritally because its one of the few legal places where you can have a drink and smoke in. We walked in, and they have a special room for "non-smokers" called "the clear"that they didn't have before. Ok, I get that, no problem. Obvisously we didn't go in there. While waiting for a machine, I fired up one of my cigars, only to get bitched at by some woman who didn't like the smoke. I was purposely even trying to keep it away from her and she still bitched. I'm like, hey if you want to go play in the clear, its the right the F over there....freaking ridiculous.

Its only a matter of time before most of the pub type places close up. We will still have some the "chain" type of places that do decent business, but all the rest will just be gone. At this point, when there is no snow on the ground, it really matters not to me. I can grab some food for the grill, some drink, and come home and spend my evening on the patio, for much less than in a pub. Just sucks seeing all the empty/closed business's as a result, but thats ok cause they will just hike my gas tax up to cover it....of course until I get my electric vehicle...then they can kiss my ass.

The shops in Long Beach have an alliance and work together on issues like this. A few years ago, the banned smoking EVERYWHERE within 20' of restaurants. Including smoke shops. The big five in Long Beach went up against the City Council and now they are allowed to smoke in their stores. Even next door to restaurants as 2nd Street Cigar.

I'll talk to Bo of Bo's Cigars in LB and ask him what the skinny is on this, and what they are doing to fight it. He's one of the guys who helps with setting up the events they do in the park, so I am sure something is in the works already.

I haven't forgotten about this, I'll be sure to ask this week and report back.
