There are a lot of routes to go, but in the end, you'd probably be happier saving up and going iPad. They are the best tablet, hands down.

iPad doesn't have the HDMI, but there are different adapters for VGA, card readers, etc.

I am trying to decide if the cheaper prices are worth giving up the features that a iPad or high end Android tablet would have. Considering I will not be a real high level user, it appears the Nook Color and Kindle Fire will serve most of the families basic entertainment needs for $300-350 less.

FWIW, the mother-in-laws iPad2 rocks. It is very user friendly and my 3 year old can switch between apps. Find her favorite Nick Jr. games on the web. I am going to drag her along to Best Buy to see how she like the Nook and Kindle.

Thanks guys! All good information.

My 2 year old knows how to operate my Xoom (Android)...Netflix provides a great distraction at the restaurant dinner table.

I haven't experienced the Ipad vs. Nook Color (or Tablet) for the end user yet. I have had iPhones and Android phones though, and I will say that the Android system is just as easy (or maybe easier) to use than the Apple iPhone (iPad) software.

I don't see myself going back to anything Apple, Android just has more advantages.

- There is a LOT of manufacturers that make Andriod based products, there is only one company that makes Apple based products.
- There are just as many apps for Android, and a lot of the paid apps for Apple are free on Android.
- Usability from what I see is much better on the Android system
- Rooting Android devices is much easier than rooting (jailbreaking) Apple products.

Go with the iPad. Best thing to do is head to an Apple store and play with the iPad (just be sure to wash your hands afterwards...).

If Xmas is not a factor, you might consider waiting until the first quarter of 2012 when the iPad 3 is due out. I have seen no specs as of this time. If the $499 entry price is a factor, then waiting will not help.

Can you please explain how and why I am a non thinking Zombie.

I like the fact that my iPad and iMac work as advertised out of the box with out having to troubleshoot it, reprogram it, hack it, or any other sort of mad scientist stuff.

I guess when you buy your cars, you get them in pieces so you can put it together the way you like, because if you drove it off the lot that would make you a non thinking zombie.....

I love my iPad, but the new Toshiba looks like it has a lot of potential, or it did last time I read up on it

Like you said... You pull it out of the box that's it... No thinking

As far as cars you probably drive it off the lot that's it.

Other people beef it up with mods and have to think and do.

Android works awesome out of the box.. however you can tweak it and make the way you want it.. different kernals overclocking it, different themes etc...

I don't smoke my cigars right out of the box either...

Whatever flips your pancakes bro...

Oh my buddy killed big foot... But threw him in the river no pictures or anything....

I believe him don't you?

I couldn't agree with anything more. The iPhone is a great device for people who want what they are told to get. If you want choices in life, which should be welcome in a free market system, then Android should be the ticket. I will give it to Apple's marketing engine. They are good at getting the SHEEP back to the pen.

Shooter,

You have my poor little brain all mixed up now. Am I zombie or a sheep? You need to tell me these things because obviously because I prefer to use Apple products I am not smart enough to figure it out on my own.
Really, we should all be surprised that I made it to where I am in life. Guess it is a good thing that I have all you Google Godz to help me along. :p :sign:

Or maybe....just because I do not want to "tweek" my iOS or OS does not mean I don't know or could not figure out how. I also do not care to build my own PCs anymore (but I could if I wanted too)
And I do not need to "beef" up my car, I push the button, it starts, me and the 4 wheels make it to work, and that works for me. Beside my car nor my tablet need to "compensate" for anything.

It might just be that I like the product, the form factor, and the way it all works for me and my house. I have been really impressed with android over the years, aside from the expected compatibility issues you are bound to have with an open source project being coded to work across multiple platforms, devices, and brands.

In the end, all consumers can be considered sheep. Apple gives a sector of the market what they need to follow them, while Google/Android does the same for a different group. And, from everything you Android fans keep telling me, there are more of you than us......... ??? ;)

This is a silly and worthless conversation between us, thank you for keeping it civil, most of my post is sarcastic and tongue in cheek...it is simply my opinion and I mean no disrespect to you by it.

Now, let's get back to helping the OP find the Tablet that is best for him.....

Have you looked at the prices of a Referb iPad on the Apple store?

It's not really a "tablet computer", and it's probably not an "I-Pad killer"....but you know, depending on what you want it for, the little Amazon Kindle Fire is pretty darn cool.

For $199.00 you get an awful lot of capability. I've had mine a few days and I really dig the machine. I'd give it a very close look and if it will do what you want a tablet for (Web browser, media server, games, etc.) it might be just the ticket.

...however, it's not from the "Church of Steve" so I'm sure lots of people will blow it off..... :p Too bad, they seem to be really great little machines.
