Mail is a huge morale device here in Iraq and for any deployed unit anywhere its pretty much the highlight of the day, more important than chow or internet even. For about a week I'd been hounding the mail crew for a couple packages of cigars which finally came in yesterday. Today when mail rolled in I just leaned back in my chair and didn't consider going down to scan the boxes for my name as they unloaded the cart into the mail lockers because I wasn't expecting anything. Then, someone else who'd just picked up their mail told me I had something prompting an expression of raised eyebrows in suprise and I cruised down the stairs to the mail room where the mail crew was still sorting. The box was a USPS Priority mail flat rate box with an unfamiliar return address and the requisite customs declaration form read "toiletries." Anticipating a care package likely from well meaning supporters, I had visions of neatly packed rows of toilet paper and white socks based on the box's fairly light weight. Digging into the box I was suprised by a ton of packing peanuts instead of the expected toothbrushes and dental floss. Burrowing further I came upon a sizeable bag... full of cigars.
I don't know if the people of CigarPass invented class or if you all are just its champions. This unexpected gift was truely the definition of a cigar bomb: a thoroughly unexpected, unsolicited gift of cigars from one BOTL to another. jfields, you are a classy, amazing person, both in your generosity and in character. I will share these cigars with everyone around me and pictures showing our appreciation will be forthcoming... after I get them stabilzed for a week.
