Marine Sniper interview excerpt

We use the M82A1 Barrett .50 cal in EOD to disarm/disrupt ordnance from safe distances. Not only are they really powerful and cool as hell, but they're uncannily accurate as well......we made many MANY shots of over a mlie out that were on target (I was only good from 1100 meters out on a consistant basis...others were better). The worst thing about shooting that weapon is NOT the recoil....it is being the spotter. As a spotter, you get absolutely PELTED with muzzle blast/ground debris as the flash suppressor is fluted rearwards (to hide the flash from the enemy) and directs all of the excess gasses rearwards.....I dreaded spotting.....but loved firing.

I'm really hoping to go to the Knob Creek shoot sometime in my life. Either that or if I ever win the TX Lottery, I'll pay the expense to have my own.

You haven't really enjoyed an M60 until you lived with it for a week or two. And I mean "lived with it"...as in it goes everywhere you go for 2 weeks. It's like sleeping with a bicycle.

I was at Ft Hood in '78 for the firepower demonstration they put on for President Carter. They blew the top of a Texas "mountain" clean off...

They had arty, tanks, snakes (Cobra attack helicopters) and fast movers (F4's)....then they had the infantry storm the place. We got to watch the whole thing (We flew some VIPs out and back). It lasted almost an hour. The thing I remember to this day was the claymores going off....jeez...make you really glad you are on the other side of "place this side toward enemy"....
