Mold :(

I just discovered 4 RyJ churchills in one of my smaller humidors have mold growing on the feet. I was wondering if these cigars could be saved or not by simply clipping the feet. This was caused presumably by my humi bead tube laying right next to the feet of these RyJ's. RH has been around (63-68). :( :(

How do the cigars smell? If the mold is fluffy and white and they do not smell musty or mildewey, chances are you'll be ok by letting them dry out. But after they've dried, I'd keep them separate from my other cigars either in a ziploc or spare churchills tubes.

Wilkey,

The mold is actually a greenish and white color. Looks like "goo" The smell of the DR RyJ is the same as all the rest, but the Reserva Real doesnt smell too hot.

I'm getting so tired of making newb mistakes :( I hope this phase ends soon!! :(

Thank you for any help you can provide!!

If it smells musty, it will pretty much always smell that way. Curiously, it might not come across strongly or at all in the drawn smoke, but the stick will certainly smell of it.

Get those sticks dried out and smoke em now if you can.

Oh great....I have my heartfelt bead tube laying right next to my other cigars in my desktop humidor because I have no other place to put it. I didn't even consider the ramifications of doing this. I will have to see if I can rearrange it to not be in direct contact with any other cigars, I suppose.

Unless you soak your bead tube down, this shouldn't be an issue. In fact, in many cases, the humidity will be most correct right at the tube.

Wilkey's advice is on the mark. I'd isolate them, dry box them, and evaluate their smokability.

Don't beat yourself up too bad. I got a box of sharks around the first of the year that grew fluffy blue mold about a month after I got them. Just too damn wet from the get go.....it happens.

Good Luck - B.B.S.

put a piece of cedar in between your smokes and the tube, and obviously try not to put the tube in the humidor "wet".

Yes, I had done the same thing ONCE, I had the beads in one of those floral foam rectangular holders right up against my cigars and a few of them that were within an inch of the beads molded.

Thank you for all of the advice guys! I am currently taking that advice and hopefully the results will be fine. As for the beads/tube situation: it is possible that I didnt' fully wipe down the tube (getting all of the sides dry before throwing it back in the humidor) but even if that wasn't the case, the lesson i learned is: its better that the cap be placed next to the tube then the foot. I'd rather cut the cap off a cigar that has mold and smoke the cigar, then have the foot be moldy. Is this the lesson to be learned here?

Question: how long should i dry box them? Also, should i try wiping away the mold before lighting (simple question, but just want to make sure). Thanks all, really really appreciate it!

Well,

Leave them in the box for a few weeks to be sure. Check in on them every few days. I'd wipe off any loose mold.

Wlkey,

Thank you very much! I just wiped off the loose mold on all 4 sticks. I decided to cut about a 1/2 inch off of the RyJ DR b/c of the mold and a muffed up foot. It looks like it didn't travel up anymroe then the foot, but I'll keep them away for a few weeks like you said. I really appreciate all of your help on this, hopefully this will be my last call for "HELP!" but i'm sure it wont be! Great to know that there's a FOG like yourself around to help out us newbs :).
