Monitor problems

O.K., we have a number of IT and computer knowledgeable people, certainly someone knows this answer. My screen is a little fuzzy, not horrible as in I can't read anything, but just enough that it's noticable. On the left side of my screen, I have what looks like a giant worm(or wind tunnel thingie) that runs from top to bottom and weaves back and forth across the screen by a quarter of an inch or so. Is my screen about to kick the bucket?.....maybe I have something set wrong?......do tell, I'm all ears. :)

Is this what they mean by a computer "worm" virus? :p ;)

Sound like the monitor is on the way out - you may be able to extend the life of the screen for a little while, IF you are comfortable working inside the monitor. If you are, simply remove the rear cover - this process varies with each monitor - I usually start taking out screws until the cover comes off - sometimes, the screws are hidden under plastic covers that need to be gently pried off. Once the cover is off, you will find numerous adjustment potentiometers - they look like small boxes with either a hole in the center with a plastic "screw head" inside, or with a plastic arm sticking out - either way, use a small screwdriver to make the adjustment. Some monitors have the pots labeled - look for the focus adjustment for the fuzziness, and find the width and height adjustments for the left border problem. (NOTE: most monitors have either external adjustments or on-screen adjustments - these MAY work for your situation, but I doubt it). SAFETY NOTE!!!! BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WORKING INSIDE THE MONITOR - THERE ARE POTENTIALLY LETHAL VOLTAGES PRESENT. Stay FAR away from the thick wire that runs up to the actual tube - this carries most of the current.

In the end, it's probably easier to just buy a new one, but if you like to tinker, you can probably get a little more use out of the screen.

This is the part I like...

SFG, make sure to post here right before you begin the process. That way, if you never make another post, we'll know what happened. :whistling:

This is the info that causes me to look for deals on line
instead of trying to fix it ;)

Do you have a de-magnatizing(SP?) button on your monitor? I'm sure you've already thought of this, but maybe you haven't. LOL.

If you open the monitor DO NOT touch this button

I wouldn't advise opening that monitor up unless you know what you're doing!

Just my .02

It's best to try this first. You may have an external button on the monitor that shows a picture of a horseshoe magnet. Some monitors have this option located within the on-screen menu. With the on-screen menu it will show a horseshoe magnet and/or have it listed as "Degousing".

If these don't work, or you do not have these options, buy another monitor.

Good luck.

Some monitors have a hole in the back where you can access the focus adjustment with a screwdriver w/o having to remove the cover. Many times the width and height adjustments can be found in front.

Geez fellas, I had no clue that you could kill yourself by working on your monitor. :0 That's hilarious because you have to understand that I'm hardly Tim "the toolman" Taylor by any means. Let's just say that the wife does the hammering, the calking, and just about everything else that needs to be repaired(usually because I break things in the first place) Well, the monitor was nothing that the 'ole wife couldn't handle. It turns out that the cord to the monitor ws slightly loose. And William would have had me fix the darn thing and blast myself through the living room wall!. Good lord. Thanks for all the advice though. Should something more happen with it, I'll know what to do. And I'll especially know to leave the large tube thing alone unless I want a good zapping. ;)

You guys are just joking about the electrocution thing......aren't you? ??? ??? ???

On another note, how often does blinker light fluid need changing? :p

Scott,

I open a monitor very rarely. I am EXTREAMLY careful if I do, and I am EXTREAMLY uncomfortable doing it. I look for very simple things like a fuse or other simple things and then get the hell out as quickly as I can. Monitors can be extreamly dangerous without proper precautions.

Scott!! YOU should NEVER open a monitor for any reason ever!!
